    hey guys,

i recently got a new laptop with win7 (first time user) and i can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the darn pop up ad that comes up everytime u update the program. i had avira free with my last laptop, that had windows vista, and i got rid of the ad with no problems.

i've tried searching all over the web and the directions that i've found for win7 64-bit does not match my system at all. could anyone with some experience tell me how to get rid of the ad? thanks in advance!

i tried following this without any success. it's actually made my avira WORST cuz now i can't even open it, run it, update it, delete it, or reinstall it...

again, that link didn't match up for some reason cuz i couldn't find the file that they were talkin about. my file says avira desktop, or something like that, instead of avira free. i tried right clicking my 'avira desktop' folder and following the rest of the instructions that it told me to under the 'security' tab. all i did was i went to the SECURITY profile, denied the read & executables, and saved. after that i couldn't do anything to to my avira. i can't seem to figure out how to turn it back, delete it, or reinstall it somehow. sigh...please help!

Hmm, well I'm assuming that going back into avnotify.exe-> properties-> security and re-enabling read & execute doesn't help? Are you logged on as an administrator or other user?

I've used Avira free before and IIRC, avnotify.exe was separate from the actual program launch executable. Updating, which needed to be done manually, would trigger the avnotify to pop up. This was Avira 9 though. Does the program itself still open or function at all for you?

I'm not finding and/or remembering anything else. I disabled the popup on Vista with no problem when I was using it. Maybe try the Avira forums.

    Good luck with it.

    thanks for the help.

i figured it out and got everything back to normal. it somehow denied my account from having full control. the ad is still there, but at least avira seems to be workin again. i have my avira set to auto update to make sure i'm always current with the virus database. i, too, had avira for vista (can't remember which version). i got rid of the ad on my vista laptop without any problems. i'll keep pickin at it. thanks for the help so far and i +rep'd ya. :)
