In the FREE AV/IS world, we have:

    Ranking of Detection Rate:
1.) Avira Antivir Personal 9(but have high false positive)
    2.) Microsoft Security Essential(very low false positive :) )
    3.) Avast! Home Edition
4.) AVG Free Edition(more or less same with Comodo)
5.) Comodo Security Suite(more or less same with AVG)

Ranking of Low Resources Usage(means won't slowdown system):
    1.) Avira Antivir Personal 9
    2.) Microsoft Security Essential
    3.) Avast! Home Edition
4.) Comodo Security Suite(more or less same with AVG)
5.) AVG Free Edition(more or less same with Comodo)

I would suggest and like Avira Antivir Personal 9 and Microsoft Security Essential. Secondary, it would be Avast! Home Edition. Never use AVG(paid and free) and Comodo(paid and free), they're dumb.

Nope, I don't think anyone ever has. Let us know what you find out about it.

Just kidding! I've been using Avira for several years now and I'm currently using version 9. I like its high detection rate and low system resource usage but its updating used to frustrate the heck out of me. Ever since they upgraded their free servers a couple of months ago updating is a snap and I have no other complaints. Sure I get the occasional false positive (like some Lenovo software for example), but I usually know what it is and just tell Avira to ignore it if I know it's a safe item.

Been using Avira for 2 years now , very good program , lots of choice in configuration , very good detection rates . Avast is also good , have used that on a few comps as well .
AVG was good , used it for 9 years , until it got bloated and buggy . I must have installed or recommended AVG for over 200 computers , would not use it these days .

Though I use MSE, I still like Avira best.

Hi, Thanks everyone, the reason I ask is because my Norton Antivirus is down to 24 day till renewal and my daughter new laptop has a trial version of Trend Antivirus with Antispy software,

I've used Trend Antivirus software before and I'm not crazy about it, and it's not on anyone’s top list but there own, so I am sure I don't want to pay for it.

And by chance was looking at ConsumerReports Magazine, Electronics Buying Guide Winter 2010 issue, where I found an article about Net Security Software: Freeware or Suite? The upshot is they suggested using a combination of three Freeware that is equal, on par with the best pay suites they tested.

They where very specific about which freeware software to use, as follows:

-Avira AntiVir Antivirus Personal - Free Antivirus Software

-Microsoft Windows Defender - Free Antispy Software

-SPAMfighter Standard - Free E-mail scanner thing
(I'm not going to need this, we use hotmail)

And they went on to say, and list the following as being less effective among the free software they tested proved no worse then the lowest-scoring pay suites.

Alwil Avast, AVG Anti-Virus, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Safer Networking's Spybot-Search & Distroy antibadware

    The four they recommended is:

1st A Their free suite (as ample protection for most)
    Avira AntiVir Antivirus Personal
    Microsoft Windows Defender
    SPAMfighter Standard

    2nd (as maximum antivirus protection)
    B1 ESET

    3rd (as Standout pay suites)

    B2 McAfee

    B4 Symantec

Ok, well long story short, I had never heard of Avira before, and not being one who believes everything he reads is the truth, I came to you guys for confirmation. And Avira is going to be my next antivirus software.

    Thank you

    Jim

Just make sure you go though the advanced settings and set it up properly . Takes a bit more time , but it is a one time set up then forget it .

If the OP is unfamiliar with Avira (as it appears from his questions), I doubt that he will know what settings to change in advanced mode or even how to access the advanced settings mode.

I use it on my both my lappy and netbook...have had no problems with it. :D

Haven't thought of switching to anything else, because of it.

Hi, I did happen upon the advanced mode, but yes I was unsure of what to change, and left it in the default state. I did add two more items to block.

    fraudulent programs
    joke programs
