    Thanks for the heads up.

I was wondering why avira wouldn't update today. Guess the servers are really getting hit.

Where will we be able to download it tonight? The avira website or DL.com or some other source?

Also, what will be the difference between Avira 8 and 7. I like version 7 because its not as much of a resource hog as AVG or Avast. If version 8 is going to be a resource hog it might be better to stick with version 7

If you are using version 7, it will automatically update to version 8.

To download the standalone installer go to the link provided. Currently the download is available only from Avira's server.

Version 8 free has faster scanning, improved GUI.

Actually I am using AVG free now and I am going to check out Antivir 8 tonight.

Got it. Everything seems basically the same besides the new layout. Scanning speed has never been a problem for me with Avira. It just finished a full scan in 7.5 minutes, as opposed to Avast which takes about 1.5 hours. I haven't tested out Avira's active protection because I use Avast for that, Avira's my primary scanner. I bet most of the new stuff is under the hood.

Mine updated automatically to ver. 8.

If you have auto update set up, it does not appear that you have to download it. Mine updates daily.

Version 8.0 is so light on resources (< 10 MB of RAM usage).

Full system scan took 25 mins in my system.

But only con is that avira 8 free still pops up the nag screen to upgrade to the premium version, although it can be disabled.

What settings to do you have for automatic scanning. Mine takes much longer, over an hour.

hmmm. I guess I must not be running a full scan. I have it set on the default config. I'll look around the options for the full scan.

If I recall - Avira does not scan email. Is this still correct? It is one reason I use Avast.

Yes. I don't use any e-mail client. So this shouldn't be a problem for me.

Avira still scans the e-mail attachments when you open/save them.

That's the one thing that deterred me from Avira at first. I'm in the middle of the 6 free months deal right now. However, I might switch back to Avast when it's done. I never had a problem with either one, but I don't know if I want to pay for email scanning that I can get for free with Avast.

Yep, I live in Outlook so it is very important to me. Avast seems to be doing well, particularly after v4.8 which is lighter.

Ran what I believe is a full scan. It took 9 minutes 15 seconds. I'm not sure if I ran a full scan though. In Configuration I selected under Scan Files the All option. However, when I press okay, the config menu disappears then reappears. The setting is still on All whenever I check config (I had changed it yesterday and my computer was shut down and Avira kept it checked all when I booted my laptop up today) so I'm guessing it's scanning All files.

Avira 8.0 free has the least RAM usage among the three free antivirus programs Avast, AVG.

    Hi Coolguy,

I am currently using AVG in my vista notebook. I want to try AVIRA but found it don't have email scanning.
I will not use any email claints like outlook, thunderbird etc. I always check emails on web.
Do I need email scanner ?.
Does AVIRA protect if I am opening and sending email on web ?.

I just want to double check .

    Thanks
    Raj

If you don't use Outlook type clients then you can safely try Avira. The web based e-mails have built in virus scanners. Also avira scans the attachments if you try to save them to your computer.

I heard that AVG 8.0 free will be released soon.
