Been using Avira for years and love it because their detection rates are on point, it's free and lightweight; however, in version 12, their one time a day ad for the free version is getting very annoying on my 2 main PCs. I've tried many ways to disable the ads but they still show through. Anyone successfully gotten rid of them? If not, I'm willing to switch AV's I guess to a very comparable free and lightweight AV. Looking at MSE lately..any others that are very comparable?

MSE is great, dont even notice that it's even installed (moved from AVG to AVIRA to MSE).

Try Avast! Free. Is more better than all (inclusive MSE).

I'm using MSE too and haven't had issues (neither did any of the other computers that have it installed in my household), but the AV comparatives for example has been showing lately that MSE is loosing ground (or has lost it completely) compared to other AV's in detection rates.
Now, from a resource point of view, its light and seems to be working just fine (no slowdowns here) on that end, but I'm questioning whether MSE continues to offer a good protection compared to other AV's.

Its not about being paranoid btw... I was actually thinking on removing an AV from my computer entirely, but in terms of recommending av's to other people, is MSE still the way to go?

AVAST is annoying with its sandbox feature and apparent 'attitude' of determining what is 'good' behavior.
Avira seems like a good alternative but the ads are an annoying feature.
Panda seems like the best course of action, although I'm questioning its resource use and effectiveness when disconnected from the Internet.

Avast 7 Free offers equal if not stronger detection, see f.i. AV-Comparatives continuous 'real-world' detection test score; 98,4% score is excellent; link.
AV/AM + sandbox functions for browser/program and file/web reputation options is unmatched for a free program, see AutoSandbox/Browser Sandboxing link.
Of course, sandboxing requires more input/can be seen as annoying but sandboxing really is an excellent security layer imo, especially for browsers/other internet facing apps, that requires only a one time effort for continuous protection. Worthy of consideration also.

I never get the bigger pop up ads. Do you mean the small ads that show up from the task bar, I find them annoying.

I have the avnotify disabled through the group policy.
