German security software outfit Avira have released the newest version of their antivirus program; Avira AntiVir 10.
The free version named AntiVir Personal 10 is at the moment already available at Softpedia (page link).

All the changes can be found in the full change log on Softpedia but be warned.
Softpedia have done a bit of a rush job and simply copy/pasted the information from Avira and mixed the information from the paid and the free version.

Besides a complete GUI overhaul, the AV has moved numerous settings from the previous expert-level to the standard-level; it's not necessary anymore to go bone-deep into the program to change a few settings.
Supposedly the update routine has drastically improved (but, imao, remains to be proven).
Scan speed has also improved by as much as 20%, according to Avira.

As the full change log mentions; " Avira AntiVir ProActiv is not available for the Avira AntiVir Personal in Q1-2010."
The much anticipated integrated behavioural blocker is not (yet?) integrated in the free version.
But as the above quoted text suggests, it might be introduced in a newer version in Q2.
The most recent on-demand test from AV-Comparatives shows that Avira AntiVir 9 has improved considerably in the false positives area, the one issue where it was beaten by it's competitors.

So, to summarize; easier to use, less false positives, better looking and as usual, superb detection. All for free. :)
    Cheers.

OT; As soon as I've got more time I'll post on the newest AV-Comparatives results and add a download link to Avira's site in the sticky asap.

Thanks for the info. I will try this out.

Avira web site doesn't have any information regarding this release.

Installed it and see 5 processes running. I remember Avira used to only run 2.

I am using MSE for now, since Avast uses a bit of CPU during downloading files from web (tried turning OFF web shield, didn't make the CPU usage down) and general web browsing (when opening a web page) .

I'm using Avira 10 now and it's not five processes, it's four. You must have had an additional Avira window/scan/update going on.

Any Moderator here can merge this Thread with the previous's?
Else, delete it. I don't mind at all.

Tried the new version. No big change, except adding one more process running, a little GUI change, and added cleaning malware upon detection.

the AntiVirProActiv is not available for 64bit? they should have mention this on the website, only found this info in the help file.

Edit: its not mention ANYWHERE on the site about it not being available for 64bit. disappointing that avira fails to inform buyers of premium about this :-(

just about the same amount of recources. i only use the guard, turn off the mail and web protection. there is one additional service running, avshadow, but barely consumes any resources. if you're on 64bit i really dont see any point upgrading at the time being.

Antivir ProActiv is available only for the Professional and Premium versions and not for the free edition.

I have the premium edition... proactiv is not available yet for 64bit. this info is not given on the website.

Edit: I'm dissapointed because i have already purchased and installed the premium edition. during purchase and installation, it wasn't mentioned anywhere about proactiv not being available for 64bit. This is only mentioned in the help file.
