Avast and AVG are both good free antivirus programs. ZoneLabs makes a good free firewall.

I use Avira Anti-Vir. It's extremely lightweight, fast, and the only downside is I need to X out of the ad that appears when it updates. It's wonderful for free, and it does work.

    avg and comodo...

Stay away from zonelabs unless they fixed that disastrous product... I used zonelabs for years until they released an update last year that dug into my outlook and killed it... and made my computer slow down to crawl. After visiting their forum it was happening to many people.... their forums were lit up with complaints.

I had to do reg edits (from their forum) to remove the product. It was worse than having a virus on your computer. I'll never go back to zonelabs again....

Will there be any conflict if I use Kaspersky and Avast at the same time? I paid for the 1 year Kaspersky license so I feel the need to use it. However, from my previous experience, Kaspersky likes to block my connections without notifying me. For my new computer, I've been using Avast, and I'm pretty happy with it. It alerts me of viruses that was able to elude Kaspersky.

I use avast, but between that an AVG is a toss up. Currently for vista, zone alarms free firewall is cherry, I hear comodo has been updated but is a bit hefty. Also, you may want to run tea timer from spybot and spyware blaster as another line of defense.

EDIT: Never run 2 anti-virus at the same time. This will cause major errors. This happened when I upgraded to avast from avg, both loaded up and locked me out. Same with firewalls.

Instead of one of those, you should get NOD32 if you're going to play.

How about the ZoneAlarm Suite or McAfee? What do you people think of those?

They got pretty good reviews and I like how they're all-inclusive, so I'm thinking of getting one of them.

I just replaced my wife's expired 15 month sub of McAfee with Kaspersky. She says her computer has increased in speed and performance substantially. She uses full-blown Outlook and she says Kaspersky is way better at handling I/O email and spam.

Currently I have 6 licenses of Kaspersky IS and using it on 5 computers. It's a really good suite, imo.

I stopped using Norton IS a year ago. Have they improved the performance of it and it's overuse of resources with Windows? That's why I dumped it after it expired.

I did demo the 30-day trial of Nod32 which just expired. It was pretty good too, right up there with KIS. But the price for KIS is more reasonable. I sent Eset an email about pricing options but they wanted me to phone them LD on my dime. So I just got another three licenses of KIS for $20 from a weekend sale at a local store.

McAfee has replaced Norton as the biggest resource hog. Norton has drastically improved in this regard. McAfee is absolutely terrible on a computer's resources.
