I'm getting ready to reinstall my system so I started checking out AV programs again and Avira has always scored fairly high in testing. Looking up their site today seems they have a version 9 out now. Anyone tested it out yet, any good, system resource hog??

I have it on both my XPS 1530, and my Mini 9 netbook, and it working out fine with no problems.

It is not a system resource hog - Whatsover!

I have it on both my machines and they work beautifully and faster than version 8.

I agree, much better than version 8. Very snappy, and with a new interface (well, startup screen). Highly recommend. I don't notice it running.

Version 8 was awesome, but version 9 is even better

Pretty much what everyone said. Avira is a solid AV, and the security suite is quite good too. Not a resource hog either - nearly on par with ESS and NIS2009. People might disagree whether Avira is the "best" out there, but usually agree that it's up there.

Tests usually show Avira as having lots of false positives, which is a bad thing, although I should note that having bought and installed NIS2009, ESS4 and Avira9 on the same system (not all at the same time of course), Avira was the only one that didn't pick out a false positive from my computer. Go figure.

Icon is still as ugly as ever though. I refuse to keep a security suite that looks like that :p Yes I'm aware I can change the icon. It still looks ugly.

<--using ESS4 atm and hating the bugs.

Are you talking about the red box with the umbrella that opens at startup (in the notification system tray)? What's wrong with it?

I think that ESET's ESS icon (the eye) is way cooler but that doesn't make Avira's horrible. :p

Yea. It's everywhere - on the system tray, in the splash screen, in the interface... you can't get away from it...it's everywheree...it's coming....it's gonna get me...it's coming closer......AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The icon isn't that hideous...as far as splash screen there is a registry tweak to disable it...just follow these 2 steps:

    1. Open regedit and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    2. In the right pane double-click avgnt and add /nosplash at the end of the path (ex. /min /nosplash)

It's also on the main interface, the system tray, and on the system tray notification bubbles every time it blocks something, and every pop-up for creating a new rule :p

    But I'll grant it's much better-looking that AVG's icon!

anyway, that wasn't the really reason I stopped using Avira 9 of course...I can't actually remember why not...but I did have a reason at the time (and it was only a few weeks ago too...i must be getting old)....

I have three boxes here, each one with a different security suite. One machine came with a 12 month subscription to NIS2009, another I bought ESET ESS 4 and the third with Avira Premium (90 day trial).

Funny thing is I can't pick out my favorite out of the three. Each have their pros and cons. But I really think these three are the best security suites I've used by far (although I've never used Kaspersky, which I hear is good too).

The OP mentioned the security suite...

Complete Security Suite with virus scanner, AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiDialer, email protection (POP3), Personal Firewall, AntiSpam, proactive AntiPhishing, RescueCD, backup, WebGuard and more.

I think most here have the free version of the AV

actually antiadware pretty much = antispyware, and most of those features are available in the free version as well.

anyway, I have the premium edition, not the suite. personal firewalls don't really matter if you're behind a router

Well I had Avira Premium 9 (AV, not the Suite) installed on one of my systems, but I have since uninstalled it and put the full Avira Suite (version 9). Been running for a few hours and in all honesty I have not noticed any difference in resources used/system slowdowns between it and the basic AV, which was pretty good.

If you have have any specific questions about the Avira Suite you can ask me here or PM me, I'll be more than happy to answer them (if I can). So far though I'm very happy with the suite.
