Do you really need to have an anti-virus running on windows vista ultimate, what with the UAC and the windows defender thingies? I mean, the only things recently that have jumped out at me are some suspicious website trojans here and there, but I'm assuming these will get blocked by vista, no?

I wouldnt trust Microsoft with my security. If you dont want to spend money theres plenty of free ones such as AVG or Avast.

Throw in AVG free edition. It takes up very little resources and updates automatically. Better safe than sorry.

Turning off UAC is not recommended, and can lead to errors with certain programs. Antivirus is like an airbag, you might never need it, but in the event that you do need it, its really nice to have.

Not being able to handle UAC off is only for people who like trying to delete the windows folder. Also, it doesn't cause any compatibility problem. None. At all.

If you want to be frustrated more in life, then turn on UAC. Without an antivirus/antipyware software, if you are surfing some "holy" sites then your computer will become a lifeless brick one day.

UAC is nowhere near as annoying as some people make it out to be. It sometimes seems as if people are timing their movements in the OS with a stopwatch, and UAC is slowing them down big time. One prompt making sure that you want to install/uninstall/delete something is not that bad. In the event that you are a lay-person, who knows nothing about computing except how to use Word, you may appreciate a prompt when trying to do something "unwise".

For most, it is probably not necessary. I really don't find it necessary to disable.
