today i uninstalled norton internet security 2006 as the trial period was over and installed avg free version.
my question is the avg as good as norton in protecting against threats? or is avg better than norton?

AVG seems to have a real fly by night unprofessional feel to it, regardless of how well it protects. I prefer avast.

AVG is better then Norton, but I recommend Avast as I have used both and I found Avast to be better.

Avast or Avira is better than AVG.

I'm gonna throw out ESET NOD32 as better than all of the above, though it's not free, so it depends on your priorities.

    Avast is very good though.

Depending on which norton version and family you're talking about. Previous version of Norton Internet Security and Antivirus seems pretty bloated, but the newest bersion is pretty good.

Symantec Norton Antivirus Corporate is better than avast and avg.

AVG is better than Norton (you have heard this before, right? ;) )...
On the one machine we ran it though it did not update as it should. It was set for autoupdate and it claimed it did, but it didn't. Every evening I did a manual search for updates and "re-discovered" everything it claimed to have updated. Done manually, the updates "stuck", but it made us uninstall it.

Right now we are running COMODO's free Internet security package on all 3 machines. I know people say the AV is not as good (yet, they have a very large and healthy community and is working very hard on it) but it did indeed catch viruses that AVG 8.x did not catch, plus spyware etc hiding deep in our system restores...

Both Avast and Avira are great.

Depends on what you expect from an AV.

    Cheers

i would not use avg over nortons. i really dont like avg and imo its much more bloated then norton 2009 is by far.
