Im interested in what is out there, I remember when i had a free download perhaps the first version of what was called pc doctor or something like that, i could throw the govt off my pc and yes it would discover who and show whom was pinging and whom was attacking your pc. Now everything is geared towards liability and political correctness .... oh k.

anyways i would like to know whats out there, it seems like they all have their run, before the hacks tear their stuff apart of the walls come tumbling down and they get outdated and dont do their jobs .
the playing field is constantly changing, and i seen about a good 8 month reign out of the best and that is about it.

Malwarebytes, stopzilla never used, and pc doctor not sure, avast was good at one time, avira was good at one time, spyware terminator false positives, search and destroy mediocre, kapersky not sure, panda not sure, sophos not sure, AVG who knows? was good at one time , now not sure.
Mc Caffee who knows anymore, Norton not sure, all have their days and run or pros and cons.
would like to hear what others think and are using or whats good out there.

all input and insight appreciated.

Norton 360, in my experience, is a VERY nice AV. It's very lightweight, but wasn't in pre-5.0 versions. It's a very nice overall AV, and I recommend it totally.

You're probably better off posting this thread in the Security & Antivirus Software section of the NBR forums, I think one of the mods will transfer this thread for you.

Personally I use ESET NOD32 and it hasn't let me down as yet. *Touchwood*

ditto. Kaspersky is the best, albeit somewhat expensive for me (student :D) and it did block some of my games once...^_^

i looked before i posted this too, eyes must be going with age. thanks for the input, I saw Kapersky in afghanistan in the swap meet huts, most were pirated and were provided a key code.

I did not buy because of both . never tried Kapersky, avira was good at one time, and a few others too, heard good things about Norton , and bad lately.
Norton heard good up til recently and now im hearing good here, interesting.

Norton used to suck, but they've changed a lot and have improved quite a bit. There are lots of reviews in this subforum, so just look around. But how exactly do you define best though?

IMO as long as you're vigilant online, MSE is sufficient as the best antivirus/malware/etc is your common sense. You can always add Comodo if you need more protection or want a customizable firewall. I don't believe in all-in-one solutions as they typically are not as good as stand alone products.

Well, a while ago, right before my first RMA, I had 46 viruses. I had a trial for ESET SS4 and I have a sub for Norton 360. ESET didn't detect ANY of the viruses, whereas Norton did. They weren't false positives, since Malwarebytes said the same. And after that, my laptop went to RMA because some sort of root virus erased my boot drive lol.

Bottom line : Norton 360 v5 is a VERY good all-in-one solution. I absolutely recommend it.

Norton has a great AV software but I don't really care for the other addons that 360 includes. What I meant was it should not be relied on as the only security software since I would also supplement that with a firewall, peerblock, and browser addons such as adblock, noscript, WOT, fireproxy, etc.

I personally don't believe in paying for security software... and the best software I've found isn't sold for money.

Comodo Firewall. If you spend the 5-10 minutes setting it up you'll basically be immune to malware. Any unknown file that executes is immediately sandboxed by Comodo -- unable to perform many of the tasks it normally would want to.

This autosandboxing is my favorite feature -- right there you're stopping a lot of malware dead.

There's also the highly regarded firewall, which will stop malware from contacting anyone/ delivering further payloads.

You can also force programs to start in sandboxes to further secure them.

You can pair this product with a free antivirus like MSE if you like.

I'd also suggest you turn UAC on.

Pardon my ignorance, what is UAC? (does it mean User Account Control? Where you have a log in password as it's booting up?) I know this is an older thread but it asked the same thing I was wondering, I have a new laptop coming tomorrow and I am torn as to what things to use to protect it. I want to give Comodo Firewall a try, but I had been using AVG on my dell Mini netbook without incident. Is MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials, right? Comes in Win 7?) good enough with Comodo to protect me if I don't do XXX sites or other questionable type sites? I surf, use Steam and light gaming on my desktop, youtube and netflix...along with email. And I never open something from someone unless I am expecting it, meaning attachments. Thanks for the help! I just want to use the right thing, I had used the Windows Firewall on the Netbook with Avg and was thinking that I wanted to step it up a bit and try comodo. :)

UAC = User Account Control. When a program requests admin permissions you will see a prompt asking whether you want that program to run as admin or not.

    No, there's no password prompt.

MSE does not come in Win7, you get Windows Defender, which isn't nearly as good.

AVG is great, you can use it alongside Comodo without any conflicts.

Cool! Thanks Hungry Man! If it was you, which one would you go with AVG or MSE? I am definitely going with the Comodo Firewall, I like that sandbox feature. Just too good of a thing to turn down. I never used Defender. But AVG was good for me for all of 2011 when I got my first netbook. :)

Is it also a good idea to login with an account that is a standard user with the security setup you recommend? OR for that matter any security setup? BTW you have just made another convert. Thanks Josea

I would definitely go with MSE over AVG.
    Consider another program called Sandboxie.

Both MSE and AVG are strong antiviruses. I personally believe that Microsoft is the company that should be securing computers, not some 3rd party. The fact that Windows is closed-source gives them an advantage.... however that's not always enough.

If you're going with Comodo I'd just stay with MSE as it has only the features you need in a setup like that.

Sandboxie is a very very powerful program but it's not free. If you're willing to pay for it and set it up it can be incredible.

Thanks for the advice! I will go with MSE and definitely the Comodo firewall. I thought the same thing you did Hungry Man, that because they should know just where to plug the security holes in then closed source OS. I am so excited, my new 17R should be here today so I am totally ready to go about installing the OS, doing all the updating and gearing up to get it safely online! I feel relieved that so many people trust Comodo, I wanted to go with it a year ago, but wasn't sure it was as good as others. I think it's proven it is. :) Thanks again! :D

Grats on the new computer. I remember getting mine almost exactly a year ago (it'll be a year on Tuesday.)

Not everyone trusts Comodo FYI, but in my opinion they make a great product and you'll be hard pressed to find a company without issues.

Does anyone know if MSE works with Google Chrome? The browser? It says Firefox or IE from the System Requirements area on the MSE part of the MS website....

System Requirements | Microsoft Security Essentials

    Internet Browser:
Windows Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.
    Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or later.

So I would have to go back to IE? Is IE 9 good? I heard that it has some issues with javascript and not all menus appear on a webpage in IE 9....Damn, I really want to use MSE but I really LOVE google chrome as a browser....Thanks for any help you guys can offer on these questions. :)
