It seems to be that Avira Premium is destroying the other AV softwares in the past year. I got ESET NOD32 because of it's low usage. Is Avira just as light as NOD32?

I just removed Trend Micro from my lappy last night, and installed Avira!

And, so far so good! I like it...I don't get crazy *Install component* popups every hour or so!~ :)

It just works great in the background.....doing the job, it should be doing!

I switched from AVG to Avira and it seems to work very well. I don't use anything right now because I am on a server OS which would require a corporate license.

For me, Avira is by far my favorite anti-virus software. The main reason why it beats NOD32 in my case, is because it's free, light-weight, AND provides ample protection.

After using Avira since Saturday...I am very, very happy that I made the switch from Trend Micro...Avira does the job it needs to be doing for me!

And, it was free = which for me is a ++++

but somehow, avira is slower when I tried to open its control center
and hard to update compare to nod32 on my connection
but I do agree it is a good anti-virus, only those two reason turn me off
if not, I will turn to avira :D

Oish :( sorry that is happening to you... :( Maybe, I perhaps got lucky for once with something that works well with my lappy???  Cuz, I really like it! Or, it's the fact that I'm not dealing with annoying Trend Micro anymore, that was causing me prob's all the time?

Maybe it will get better for you?? ;)

It's been said Avira has slow updates but for the most part it's worked great for me. I disabled the pop up ad during updates using elitekillers directions and the start up splash screen through the registry (can also be found in the Avira forums)

I've also set the scheduler to update 6 times per day rather than the default which is once per day.

avira has FANTASTIC detection but does also have more false positives than most do.. but overall imo nod isnt even near as good as avira anymore. eset used to have a winner on their hands and their newest efforts dont compare and imo their cust service is going down the tubes.

the only shortcoming of avira is it has trouble removing a lot of things if they do get past it (which is not to likely with avira). avira is def as light or even lighter than nod is and has little to no system impact.

avira's firewall is lacking imo if you use their suite its a decent basic firewall but not nearly as good as other offerings from other suites out there..

imo if you really want to run anything with avira which i dont believe you really need to.. i would get something like a malware type of program. malwarebytes rocks for that end of things.

Avira is an excellent AV; probably the most improved one in the last few years.

One word of caution however; the "Classic" Servers for the free edition can be slow at times, particularly when a new program update has been released.

Does AVIRA have the ability to update from a local directory?

Lets say im gonna put the update files on a NAS, and all the computers in my home network can update from it instead of all 5 computers downloading the updates individually from the net.

To save bandwidth in the long run of course.

No, im downloading AVIRA now and testing it out on the machine. Thanks for that update manager though, gonna try it out.

AVG has the ability to update from a selected directory, but its not automatic updates. It has to be done manually :(

Does Avira scan Outlook Express mail before it lands in "IN" box? Avast does, but have been unable to find out info regarding Avira's capability in this area.

Avira hasn't got a dedicated mail scanner as Avast has but it does scan every file you download and try to open, so in the end Avira will also scan every email/attachment that comes in.
PST files are regarded as 'archives' by Avira so if you set it to scan archives also, Avira will also keep an eye on your PST files.
    Cheers.

I made this switch about 6 months ago with no problems. I did like Avast, but Avira just seems to work better/run smoother. I had occasional conflicts with Avast's Outlook plugin. I use Threatfire too. Don't see a need to buy anything.

IMHO, Avira does an excellent job.

You rarely notice it is there just quietly protecting your computer using minimal resources.

Avira's pretty awesome. However is there a way so I can make it scan finish the entire computer, then have it ask me what I wish to do with detected files, rather than have it pause every time it detects a suspected file?

I would like to be able to scan my computer through the night then clean everything the next morning. :)

Now the memory usage never even went above 30% (with firefox open)

With AVG, it often goes above 35%. Sweet :D

Definitely recommended to anyone looking for free solution

Yes, most people here use the free version of Avira Antivir (as do I).

I use Comodo Firewall Pro (free version) as my firewall in addition to Avira Antivir (anti-virus software), Windows Defender (real-time spyware scanner), Spybot Search & Destroy (for its immunization feature), and a-squared free (for on-demand anti-spyware scanner).

I've been using Avira Premium for over a year and i love it.. By far the best AV ive used.

The only thing i run along with it, is on my vista machine the built in Windows Defender and CCleander, and on my XP machine, just CCleaner.

I have hooked a few of my friends onto it and they love it as well

    The spyware protection...
I wanted to use a single program for virus and spyware... That's the only reason why i paid for it and got premium. I came across Avira when i stupidly clicked a link i shouldn't have on mIRC. Got a trojan, and i researched ridding my computer of the trojan, and Avira was the only program that people have successfully fixed the problem with, so i went ahead with Avira and never looked back.

Ok, I installed SAS and let it do a complete scan of my computer. It took ~30 min and all it found was a few tracking cookies (not complaining :p). I'll have to do a little more research on what it scans for and how, but it seems like a good product. Still hasn't given me any good reason to switch over from a-squared though :D
