    Hi folks,

I wonder if I am having some kind of problem with my Avira Antivirus Free Personal version.

Here is my AVIRA info ...

    Product version 10.2.0.696 6/29/2011
    Search engine 8.02.06.28 8/5/2011
    Virus definition file 7.11.12.233 8/5/2011
    Control Center 10.00.12.31 6/28/2011
    Config Center 10.00.13.20 6/28/2011
    Luke Filewalker 10.03.00.07 6/28/2011
    AntiVir Guard 10.00.01.59 6/28/2011
    Filter 10.00.26.09 6/28/2011
    AntiVir WebGuard 10.01.09.00 6/28/2011
    Scheduler 10.00.00.21 4/28/2011
    Updater 10.00.00.39 6/21/2011

Now I manually update my Avira "Everyday" ... so I have the latest definitons and what not ... and I have had NO Problems at all for the past 2 or 3 years that I have been using it ...

Starting yesterday, 5 August 2011, AVIRA scan runs a bit different !!!!
Brfore when I ran the Scan ... it just ran and ran ... takes about hour and half or so ... (my biggest gripe ... why it does not have a FAST scan and different options) ... and then it tells me that I have no problem and that is that ...

But yesterday it ran Awfully fast ... then it Suggested that it Strongly Recommends that I should "Restart" my computer in order for ti to Fix my Problem ... so I did ... and it restarted and started running the Hidden documents scan and on on ... then said Found NO Problem and again Asked me to Restart the computer ... it seems it is STUCK in a loop ...

So, I started my laptop in Safe Mode and ran the following AVs and they all came back CLEAN ...

    - Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM)
    - SuperAntiSpyware (SAS)
    - GMER
    - Miscrosoft Safety Scanner Tool (the Latest one)

Now, the only thing that I had done before this problem started was I ran "MBR.exe" ... from GMER download page ... since I was experimenting with it ... to see if I had any "HIDDEN" rootkit ... BTW, Ihad NEVER used it before ... the program did NOT go thru correctly ...

I wonder that CRAPPED out my AVIRA Antivirus!?!?

My next step is to uninstall AVIRA and install it again ...

Q: Any Suggestion or Help would be appreciated! Thanks,

    G! :)

how long have you had superantispyware on your computer?
colleague had 128 trojans on his desktop and it took a week to clean using various antivirus and spybot/superantispyware/cc cleaner.

avast found more than the rest but could not clear 2 hidden rootkit.
kept doing the hidden scan but with the same results. i then took all the software off one by one except the antivirus and as soon as i removed superantispyware the virus result only came back with one problem.
so somewhere in SAS there is either a rogue exe or a false positive.

so might be worth removing SAS and see what results you get back.

    Hi MrDJ,

Thanks for taking the time and replying to this delimma ...

You know I just upgraded to SAS 5.0 ... that might be it ...

I will uninstall SAS first and run Avira ... see what happens ... and if I will get the same loop thing.

If still the problem then I will uninstall Avira and install Avast Free and see what happens.

I have never used AVAST before ... so there might be some learnign and getting used to for me on this one.

Q: MrDJ, what Antivirus do you run on your machine!?!?

    Thanks again,

    G! :)

I know it sounds simple, but have you tried doing system restore?

^^ I had tried Avast 5 once, and didn't like it. It has too many fancy settings, that's it. The web guard makes browsing a tad slower, and CPU usage is noticeable when downloading files. The update was really fast with Avast, faster then Avira's (I hate the busy symbol showing up when Avira updates).

i used to use avg free then upgraded to avg pro but after a year it was so power hungry i tried avast free and liked it so much i upgraded again to the pro version.
my laptop is £2000 so i prefer to have as much protection as i can even though ive never had a virus on it yet.
i didnt set up anything for avast as it does it all for you. firewall auto changes when you are not on your home network and the only thing i have to do myself is click the scan button once a week.

    Hi folks,

@ Hiker ... didn't even cross my mind ... I was so busy trying to figure out what happened. Thanks. Will try as a "Last" resort.

@ coolguy ... after seeing some posts about needing a "Special" uninstaller just to uninstall Avast ... I kind of gave it a 2nd thought ... will stay with Avira for now.

@ MrDJ ... Thanks for replying on what AV you personally is using right now.

BTW, meanwhile, I decided to uninstall Avira ... the crazy thing is the installer says Avira 10.0.0.652 ... but under Version Info it show that is version 10.2.0.696 ...I don't know what the deal is on that ...

I installed Avira 10.0.0.650 ... the last older version and it automatically downloaded the DEfinitions Update and what not ... here is the Product Info ...

    Product version 10.0.0.650 6/17/2011
    Search engine 8.02.06.28 8/5/2011
    Virus definition file 7.11.12.233 8/5/2011
    Control Center 10.00.12.29 6/17/2011
    Config Center 10.00.13.16 6/17/2011
    Luke Filewalker 10.00.04.02 6/17/2011
    AntiVir Guard 10.00.01.58 4/21/2011
    Filter 10.00.08.07 6/17/2011
    Scheduler 10.00.00.21 4/21/2011
    Updater 10.00.00.39 6/17/2011

The only differnce between the two that I see I think it is the WebGuard ... is available in the Newer Problematic Version.

I have NOT had a chance to run a Complete Scan ... I will and I will post my result ... if problem fixed ... I have a feeling it might have gotten fixed.

Also, I will NOT install SAS version 5.0 ... will stay with the last version 4.56.1000.

    Thanks again guys!

    G! :)
