I have tried a various antivirus programs (avast, avg, norton, kaspersky, panda..) and made several tests, i also made a test with a web page that had a virus and only AVIRA gave me an alert..

using it for more than a year, i found that AVIRA was the most effective, not a resource hog and really good detection/protection!!

I haven't try Eset NOD32, is it better and more eficient than AVIRA??
i see it's well rated.. (i don't care to pay for it)

This is a difficult question, at least for me it is. I am a firm believer in NOD32, however Avira has really impressed me to say the least. I made the switch permanent on all my machines 2 months ago and find it to be even lighter on resources than NOD32. It also picked up some test malware I ran on an XP Virtual Machine, that NOD32 didnt. I say go with the Avira. I'm about to buy licenses and go pro for all my machines to help support them even tho the free version works great.

avira alllllll the way nod has let me down to many times...but imo i prefer kaspersky 2009 over both of them personally and i own lic to all three and have used them all extensively to test.. just my 2 cents

avira still has a few update issues where it will lock up during a update or may start to update and go on forever but its rare. also a few known firewall issues but nothing major. imo nod version 3 had way to many issues for me everything from 100% cpu usage to crashing to it turning itself off on occasion etc... imo it just was not what i expected from eset

This is true and one of the main reasons I stuck with NOD32 ver 2 up until the big Avira switch of 08. :)

It helps to know that, because i though NOD32 could be better than AVIRA, but know that you mention i´ll stick with AVIRA, the free version is awesome i just wished that it would have less popup windows with advertisement. Glad to hear you´re also switching to AVIRA.

There are ways to block the popup window, just search google. The best way, however, is to support the company and purchase the product when you're financially able to. :)

When Avira free is as good as it is, I see no reason to buy any anti-virus.

I have the free version of AVIRA with Spyware Blaster and Windows Advanced Care Personal that has Antispyware Protection, both of them are very good. I really like Windows Advanced care Personal from PC Tools, you should try it.

Avira AntiVir rocks. And hard. It rocks Chemical Brothers' "Smack my ***** up"-kinda hard.
It rocks so hard, it outscores any other AV program when it comes to detection rates; link.
Imo it has a rather low memory usage, frequent updates, a decent GUI and it's available for zero $/€/nachos.

There are programs out there with an even lower memory usage (and almost comparable detection rates) but they will cost ya...
    Cheers.

    You have two choices

    1. Get the best Anti Virus program for free

    or

    2. Pay for an over hyped anti-virus program

Kaspersky is far from over hyped.

And you could of easily god kaspersky for free. Frys was just having a deal like what 1-2 weeks back AR? Or you could pay like 5 bucks for one year if you get a key off ebay.

Why is the best???? Have you try AVIRA?

Your comment really doesn't help if you don't justify it, just takes space.

it seemed like you were responding to my comment and not the topic

but yeah my question was which is better, kaspersky or avira

the reason i ask this is sometimes i see kaspersky on sale and i was wondering if it would be worth it or if i should just stick to antivir

    Eset NOD32 hands down.

I've tried Avira AntiVir Premium and Personal both of which boggled my Eee PC. I also tried Avast! Home Edition and that was alright. It had a weird interface and again still slowed down my Eee PC.

Well, I was basically running my notebook without an antivirus for a while until I realized that I should be protected; especially with all these floating virus popping out of now where (ex: Facebook). So I decided to try out ESET NOD32 trail version. Ran great and used up little memory and my CPU usage wasn't jumping when I opened up a basic application.

I am really thinking about buying it now, especially for $30 (free shipping) deal at Newegg. :)

I had NOD32 for 5 years and switched to Avira free and think the latter is up to doing the job. A couple things to note, if you find it troublesome, search how to disable the pop up ad during update, and schedule several daily updates as the default is only once per day, not automatic like NOD32.

Can you disable the popups (advertisement) in Avira free version?
