I'm wondering which one is the better anti-virus program for me. I want it to use as few resources as possible.

I also don't need it constantly running when it doesn't need to be.

Do either of these check e-mails that I receive through Windows Mail using G-Mail as an IMAP or automatically scan my downloaded files with Firefox? I have not seen either of them say they are checking.

they both perform well. It is mostly users preference. I use them both on my comps with a mix of 80/20 (Avast/AVG)

    cheers ...

Theres more malware out there that specifically targets AVG, and it is good at disabling it. i ran across this a couple of times, thats a big reason i switched to avast, which i still use, and love. A third alternative is Avira Antivir Free Edition. also very good and light on resources.

Try both and decide. For me personally I prefer Avast over AVG only because I had issues with AVG with too many false positives. Having said that, I don't like the UI on Avast very much even though you can change skins.

I would say yes, especially with version 9 out now where the free version has been updated to include anti-spyware and some sort of program tamper protection. Avira always scored high in detection rates too so it's definitely worth a try IMO.

I have used avast for a while now and i love it, its been rock solid. Avira is installed on my virtual machine, and it is also very good software.

How did I know this would turn into an Avira thread?

Oh yeah, because Avira is THE best! lol.

But really, Avira is better than both AVG and Avast, or any other antivirus for that matter.

I had AVG for a while on two 2003-vintage Sony Vaio desktops I had up until last year. Both had problems with AVG either turning itself off or becoming disabled intermittently. Major headache.

I like the interface much better on AVIRA than AVAST.

I uninstalled AVAST from my mom's computer and installed AVIRA yesterday. Much cleaner. Much faster, it seems.

on this notebook and my last one, they ran about the same. As far as interface goes, i didnt like the original avast one, so i replaced it. i just downloaded a couple skins from their site and changed it.

I love Avast! mainly because of how customizable it is, its detection rate, heuristics, and real-time protection are really good, too, I have been using Avast! for 2 years already, and I would not swap it for another antivirus. The anti-spyware module is really handy.

Also, it is lighter than AVG, but really, try AVG, Avast! and Avira and check which one is best for you, that is the best way to get the right choice.

Running two AV's in standard configuration (both with real-time protection enabled) is a recipe for insecurity.
Both real-time protection functions will likely interfere and also cause major slowdowns.
Only if you know exactly how to install/use a second AV as an on-demand scanner only, it's wise to use two of them.
    Cheers.

you may installed the any software from the AVAST or AVG both are good

you may installed the AVIRA .

it is the better than the best.

so choose which one is better after that installed .

I switched to Avast after updates of AVG and Avira both caused freeze-up problems on the scan. Avast remained stable in the latest version.
