I am having a problem with AVG free right now. It isn't updating the definition files. Any ideas of why this could be happening?

Same problem, here: can't connect to update server. This has happened
several times. I've also had the bin file missing problem and had to
uninstall and reinstall to get that straightened out.

Version 8 is a far cry from 7.5. If this keeps going the way it has, I'm
    dumping AVG for good.

you wont miss avg, since that time i changed all my pcs to avira.
there is only 1 issue with avira free, an annoying upgrade pop up.

    i couldn't take it :)
there is a way around it vista and for xp pro

I also used AVG 7.5 for yonks. Liked it.

Upgraded to AVG 8. Neither liked or trusted it. So I uninstalled it.

Installed Avast and have never been happier.

Avast does its job so well that I dont even know it's there. Has not slowed my lappie down and does not require any input from me. But hey, that's what AV should be?? Unobtrusive.

So I can get on with my work. Knowing my lappie is protected.

    Cheers,
    Theo

I had some of the same problems with AVG. I switched to NOD32 and never looked back.

My son tried AVG in his new laptop, and the whole computer went ballistic. Not only did it not update correctly, it seemed that the app was incompatible with every other security program he had installed. Weird because we have used AVG in the past without any problems. He broke down and got NOD.
