Any users of AVG notice lately, when you check for updates occasionally it opens IE and takes you to their order page to upgrade to the pro version?
It might not bother most, but I do find it annoying.
I might consider trying a different brand.

Yes, one of the 'benefits' of using free AV software.

I've been using it for quite a while and even though it has an ad an update, it doesn't slow down your system like Avast, and isn't incompetent like AVG.

I think I read about that offer here not too long ago. Free for 1 year right?

    Until November 30, 2008

And as you can see, the serial is compatible with AVG 8.

Ah I see. I might go with mcafee again (gasp!), but I had a good experience with them last year.

If you switch from AVG to a paid AV, before going back to Mcafee, try the trial versions of Nod and/or Kaspersky first, talin. You'll be happier with either app, I'd guess.

QFA. I bought licenses of Kaspersky for 3 computers (to replace Norton once it had expired) and it's an excellent app. I'm also using the 30 day trial of Nod32 on my new laptop (see sig) and it's equally as good as Kaspersky. Highly recommended.

So what do you think of version 8? I liked the simplicity of the previous versions, and they had no fancy GUI.....

Wow...I just got this popup for the first time today. In my book, that's adware...I'll be moving to a different AV for my D430 as soon as I reinstall my Acronis-made-custom-XP-image.

AVG just lost my support, and probably for good.

Avira Antivir is better than AVG, and although it has a popup every update, it doesn't open any web browsers. You might want to check that out if you don't want the resource hog Avast.

Isn't there a way to remove that pop-up? I'm not sure if I found it in their forums or Googled it... But it works. Updates without even me knowing about it [I also set the Update Schedule to 'Invisible'].

It's just pretty sad that anyone would have to resort to "hacks" to have no popups. It's getting to be where there's no such thing as free any more.
Pity, some of the best quality software I've ever used before was free.

Your moral support? You sure aren't talking about financial support. What do they care that they have one less non-paying customer sucking bandwidth?

I don't see what the big deal is. I used AVG for about a year and found it to be the best free antivirus.

So what if they open up a single ad page when you update definitions?

Is that really too much for you guys? It isn't enough that it's free?

And talin29, it IS still free. A single ad pop-up doesn't cost you money.

That reaction is void of reason and respect.

Of course it's free, with a catch. But think of all that bandwidth that's going to the free users when that popup comes up, that could be used to making updating faster.
Either way, yes it is still free, but my whole point was, it's annoying, for some, for most I'm sure it's not. But for me it is, and so I'm moving on.
If you want to use AVG, you are more than welcome to StormEffect, that's your choice. :)

Well you have to give AVG credit for making their program backwards compatible with every version of Windows ever made!! :)

Look back to post #19 in the upper right corner of the screen shot posted. Right above the Windows logos. See it? "Windows 200"

I've only seen the AVG redirect twice, once on each laptop. It does not really bother me, as I've been freeloading their product for many years on many machines. If anything, it made me aware of a new alternative........

They want me to PAY for AVG!?!?!?!?!!!

Is there going to be an AVG 8 Free?

If not, this sucks. I'm moving to AVAST or Avira if so.

I switched to NOD32 after getting tired of pop ups in my antivirus program. not too bad for Avira Antivir but i still didn't want to be bothered. I say, if you're gonna get a pop up, at least use Avira Antivir instead of AVG for better protection with less resource usage.
