After having given up on AVG Free because the automatic update downloader would not function, I decided to give it another go. I re-installed it, the update downloader updated the virus database and everything seemed okay. I changed the setting on the update to manual.

However, this evening I tried to update the virus database. The Task Manager showed that the update was running but no update was being downloaded.

Has anyone had a problem with AVG Free on Vista? Or is CCleaner or Advanced WindowsCare changing some setting?

Any suggestions? BTW, I can run AntiVir with no problems. It automatically updates just fine. And, no, I am not running both anti-virus programs at the same time.

    Brent,
Thanks. I think that Windows did update after I installed AVG. However, does this mean that every time Windows updates you have to re-install AVG? What am I missing? (I'm tired and it's late!)

    Bill,

From that post, it sounds like you'd have to re-install AVG after every Windows update. There was another article on the AVG Free site about un update to the program updater. No details, but it's due out in the next couple of days and maybe it will improve?

It's supposed to download automatically as part of the update process (but it's being rolled out over several days, so you don't know when you'll get it). So maybe if you don't update Windows until the weekend, it will stick.

    Brent,

Thanks again. I uninstalled AVG, ran Windows Update and installed, and then reinstalled AVG. It updated fine, but it did the last time I installed it also. We'll see what happens.
