Since the latest program update for AVG 8 Free, I get this nag screen when I update about once a day. How would I get rid of it without buying AVG?

LOL! I have no idea on doing it currently.
But a news for me though, that AVG is showing the NAG message just like Avira.
I know how to disable Avira's NAG message only. Sorry can't help.
    But thanks for this news.

Is there a way to disable it? The previous notification that just dropped down from the main AVG screen was disabled when you deleted 2 files, I'm wondering if the same thing can be done for this?

I think the culprit behind this NAG screen is in the AVG directory folder(where you install it). You need to find a .exe file(responsible for the NAG screen). Maybe you need to check each .exe file in the AVG directory folder by double click on them, find the 1 when you double click on it, it will show the NAG screen.
    AFter that,
    Right-click "NAGscreen".exe; Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
Look under the Permissions folder for System.
Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK

No nag screen with Avast Free , you get 60 days to register , but registration is free.

I would avoid AVG. It is better to run Avira and Avast!
However, AVG is too famous, even its protection sucks(personal opinion and experienced), but people still using it.
Get rid of AVG and get Avira(strongest in free AV but have nag screen yet can be disable using some tweaks) and Avast!

Tried it, none of the .exe in the install folder is responsible.

If you don't mind, try Avast! or Avira instead of AVG.
Check which is the BEST antivirus here, http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/03_13a.xml
Avira is very light resources and damn powerful but have NAG screen(can be disable).
Avast is slightly heavy resources(compared to avira) and powerful as well. Do not have NAG screen.

    Guys,

To get rid of the AVG Free 8 pop-up window advertisement:

    1 - Go to: C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8

    2 - Rename the following 3 files:
    • avgmwdef_us.mht to avgmwdef_us.mht.bak
    • avgresf.dll to avgresf.dll.bak
    • avgfree_us.mht to avgfree_us.mht.bak
If you want to undo the changes, just remove the .bak file extension from all 3 files. Simple! :)

Many of these files do not exist for me. I did this before when I wanted to get rid of the drop down notification in 8.5, but now the drop down is replaced with a pop up.

There are tricks out there mentioning about renaming certain files. It must be noted that these tricks are only "temporaire", meaning with each update AVG would likely to restore the nagging screen or simply not be able to update due to the "missing" files.

The last post on these tricks was made in March'09. I guess the "tricker" gave up on chasing AVG :D

I agree with many posters above to try other AV apps until AVG gets back to "normal", to honor the free version without "ad-ware"

    cheers ...

    How about,
    Right-click each of them(avgmwdef_us.mht, avgresf.dll, avgfree_us.mht); Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
Look under the Permissions folder for System.
Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK

This would make the files to stay permanent deny by you(your system will block these files to run, so it won't run the NAG screen and the AVG update might not able to change it back normal and NAG you) and can't be change unless by yourself.

Sorry, I don't use Vista, so I didn't know. Sounds like it would work.

OK just reinstalled AVG 8.5 Free and I see those files. I deleted those files, but the drop-down still exists in the main screen. And I am unable to update AVG, it says Control File Not Found.

Have you tried out my method?
Deleted them = AV corrupted for sure.

OK just did it now. After reinstalling AVG, it got rid of the drop down screen and updates fine. Will give it a bit of time before deciding whether the popup is gone. Thanks!

So, isn't it help? Because I do not use AVG but Avira NAG screen can be disable using this way. If this success, then I would create a topic on fixing this.

The popup is an HTML file with associated images, stored in Program Files\AVG\AVG8\Notifications with other files that AVG actually needs to function.

    I just did the following:
--Navigate to that folder, and set the view to Details, and sort by Date Modified.
--Create a new subfolder; I called mine "AVG popup ad"
--Copy all the files modified July 17th into that new folder.

Notice that, in the ad and in the file names, "opportunity" is spelled wrong... giving it that "Russian malware" look and feel!
