    Hi.

I hope the active antispyware part does not expire, like the avg standalone antispyware download.

    Thanks

    John.

Is it still as light on resources as the last version (7.5)? I'm using this on my desktop and was wondering if upgrading to 8.0 might slow it down...

    Thanks

I actually thought 7.5 was a resource hog compared to the other free AV programs.

I switched to Avira a few months ago. But, AVG 8.0 offers a lot more features than Avira.

Is the antispyware they offer actually good? And does it use the same scanning engine as 7.5? Because Avira and Avast are always above AVG in detection ratings.

im about to do a clean install soon. Any experiences with AVG 8.0?

I keep getting popups about it on 7.5

    thanks

This is good to hear. Actually I switched to Avira from AVG 7.5 due to its better detection rates than AVG.

The antispyware engine is from Ewido networks (which AVG acquired). It's version 8.0 now. I also use avira because of it better detection rates. But updates are a little bit slow with avira. I use Windows defender for my active spyware protection.

I actually turned off windows defender because in the year I've had my computer it has yet to find 1 piece of spyware. It just hogs up resources and is of very little use.

Avira is the only anti-virus program i have.

I use threatfire in combination with Avira.

I recently installed comodo firewall, and I'm trying to get used to that. I Don't know if I ever will.

and I use superantispyware as my spyware scanner.

Funny since i formated and re-installed Vista a couple of hours ago and have not used the internet very much.

avgrsx.exe uses 40 megs, is that the main part of version 8?

The cookies detected by other antispyware programs are not really spyware. How come defender will detect a spyware when your computer really is not really infected?

That's the reason I use WD. Others will detect every piece of cookie as spyware/adware.

I found the spyware portion to be a little too aggressive... I went by its recommendations and it nuked ALL my cookies... it doesn't appear to distinguish between potentially benign and potentially malignant cookies.

Of course MS Defender leaves all cookies alone - it is produced by a company that has long promoted and encouraged the use of cookies!

I ran a scan and reviewed the results this morning. It said it found nothing yet when I click on the warnings tab, there's a huge list! Because I saw the other thread, i wasn't too surprised but it still was a bit interesting.

Anyway, I'm really liking the new interface, it's very polished, and the new features like linkscanner, hopefully they update it so it works in FF3 beta 5.

Interesting. It picked up my cookies as well, but did not remove any automatically. I had to left ctrl+left click (highlight) the ones I wanted to remove and hit delete.

Yeah, because by default it puts a warning on every single cookie on your system... a little too aggressive in my opinion.

Good find. Since mine was somehow unchecked, that might explain why the cookies were not deleted.

On a side note, I just noticed a new notification window popping up when opening AVG:

Never noticed this with the 8.0 trial version on my other machine. Must be a "nag" screen for the freebie version. ;)

Yeah, and it doesn't stay shut... a minor annoyance.

I don't see it now though, as I'm giving Avira a try after hearing from all its proponents. ;)

What is the pop up you are talking about?. Is it similar to one in Avira? I wanted to try AVG 8.0, but will stay away for a while.

Not so much a pop-up, as a pop-down ;) It's a little window that opens up off the bottom of the main window

The one in my post above, which is just a short text message that appears beneath the AVG window when not in full screen. They will likely vary the message from time to time, prompting us to upgrade.

It does not bother me though, it just caught me by surprise.

I don't think it's trying to get you to upgrade (at least not yet) What it's saying is true-the linkscanner tool is included if you opted to use the AVG security tool bar during setup

I have the non-free version of AVG 8 and I'm going back to 7.5. The interface looks neater than 7.5 and the features seem better, however it's crippling my computer. I have 3GB of RAM and I'm not running any heavy application but the Link and Email scanner is making my email client and my browser to become very heavy and the Internet connexion is very slow. I also got the gazillion false positives. Overall, I think it's a nice product but I don't think it's ready yet.

Linkscanner's only functional for 30 days, well that just sucks, considering that siteadvisor is free, even if siteadvisor doesn't actively scan results like linkscanner.

Sugary sweet sickness! Reps for you! I was going to be verruh verrah angry if AVG didn't offer the free version soon. :p

Edit: Well, it seems fine, and the interface is a bit better and more streamlined, but the new tray icon really doesn't look right with my desktop. I may go back to 7.5 for as long as I can, just because I like the icon better.

I only change my AV programs when i do a clean install. I only do it when the system is still fresh, less problems.. good timing with AVG 8

Thank god the email scanner is trial ware, i wanna disable it but it keeps nagging me to turn it back on. Waste of my RAM

edit: Wait where does it say it expires in 30 days?? .. it should all be free, it is the free edition after all

well, I think I'm a convert to Avira now, for one simple reason - not it's resource footprint, but rather its notification icon... the open umbrella/closed umbrella is genius.

The only gripe I have with AVG is when you disable a feature, like the Link Scanning or automatic updates, the system tray icon has that exclamation on it. Is there a way to get rid of that?

edit: btw, AVG is only 25MB in size while Avira is 53MB and avast! is 40MB.

At some point you will be prompted to upgrade before any further definitions updates are downloaded, just like they did with 7.0. (IMO)

Yep, they've been doing that for a while now. When 7.5 support ends, you will be forced to upgrade if you wish to keep using AVG. I forget exactly how they worded it back then, but that was the jist of it......
