i thought that since these two leading free AV's have released new versions, i'd start a thread where people give their inputs on whether there really is any improvement or not. :)
i know there's a thread for avast!4.8 but we could kinda compare these two new versions here.

i'm testing avast rite now.. will also test avg8.0 in a couple of days..

The new AVG seems to be on the buggy side when the web scanner is enabled. Some have reported disabling the browser plugins for safe search helps.

hmm.. like i said i'll be testing it out soon..

as for avast... there's definitely improvement!.. not soo much of a resource hog now.. but on-demand scanning is still horribly slow!

well avg8.0 has a trial version of the 'anti-virus'.. so ya thats wat i'll be testing first.. then the security suite.. but they dont have a free version of 8.0.. its kinda wierd that they give the new version for buying customers.. and not as a free software.. wouldn't it make more sense to do it the other way around?

Using AVG 8.0 right now. Definitely takes some getting used to, as settings are in different places than 7.5, and there are a slew of new features such as Anti-Rootkit Scanner, Web Shield and Link Scanner.

The updater seems slower in general, but the program opens faster than it did on 7.5 (which was getting quite lethargic with age).

AVG 8.0 contains an integrated anti-spyware scanner. Since this is the case, should I uninstall the old AVG Antispyware utility?

Yeah, you are probably right. I'd be better just uninstalling it, since it would be redundant anyway...........

Of course you didn't have problems with NOD32, that's why it's so great. :D If you decide to download a virus it'll stop you and tell you it quarantined it. Then let you carry on.
