    Hi.

I just upgraded to AVG FREE 8.0

But when i run it, it says i have 25.050 warnings and most of them are spyware.

the funny thing is a formatted and re-installed vista32 today.

I have tried spybot and superantispyware and they do not spot any problems.

    What is going on.

    Thanks

    John. [IMG][/IMG]

Those aren't false positives. I recognize some of those as being adware/spyware. You should stop using IE because of the insecurity of its activeX. If you notice, all of those warnings are due to activeX. I know most of the stuff shown is bad stuff because they're on spywareblaster's list.

Just follow AVG. They are just cookies - not really spyware/adware. Go with Windows defender then.

    Hi

I have tried windows defender, you mean the 1 built into vista.

    It finds nothing.

I have run ccleaner and AVG still says i have 25.000 warnings.

    Thanks

    John.

Hmm. So you use FF? Have you ever used IE because that's what uses activeX. I don't think those are cookies either, but activeX stuff which is why CCleaner doesn't get rid of it. Have you tried running A Squared, Superantispyware, or Malwarebytes?

You didn't re-install because of the warnings right? You could have cleaned all that stuff out without resorting to a re-install.

I wish AVG would just stick with being an antivirus and nothing else. It's become pretty bloated. I'm thinking of switching to Avast!. Not sure though.

I dunno, I think it is nice that they incorporated anti-spyware functions into it (as it is one less app installed). Quite frankly, I'm surprised that the free version is anything more than a basic antivirus (as it downplays the need for Grisoft's premium version).

Its not that bad.. unless your real fuzzy about your protection programs

Its not much different from 7.5 . I wish theyd turn down the Spyware aggresiveness though..

I'd also like the option of disabling the auto-updater without having to constantly read " You are not protected blah blah..." and seeing the " !" in the system tray. You could do it in 7.5.....

You can delete the cookies (reported as spyware/adware by AVG) from your browser instead.

I just use CCleaner, as it is easier than manually selecting them in the AVG window.

    Hi.

    The 25.000+ warnings are back

But i know what is causing them

The program is called "ADVANCED WINDOWS CARE"

I have been using this for years.

It`s the "Security Defense Immunisation" function

I ran AVG before and after so i am 100% sure this cause the problem.

I will just not use that function

I wonder if spybot`s imunisation causes the same problem

    Regards

    John.

Just to make sure, you got that program from a good site right? I'm guessing you did. That's pretty weird that AVG would target your host file like that. Immunization is supposed to prevent spyware from being installed. It does this with host files, however, it looks like AVG might be targeting those. AVG, stick to something you're decent at, anti-virus.

i had the same issues when i installed avg 8.0 and after some testing and checking through other programs i discovered that the spy ware scan in avg is detecting the changes to the registry that spybot makes when you immunize your system and is giving you a warning about these changes it list them as spyware adware and trojans if you move these to the virus vault and check the immunization in spybot you will see some have been disabled.its a compatibility issue that avg has with some other spyware programs like spybot and also advanced windows care hope this helps you

Are you using Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal ??

I got 24,000+ warnings in AVG 8.0 and managed to remove all the "threats" through the Virus Vault (several 1000 at a time).

After removing them Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal's SECURITY DEFENSE showed 24,000+ unprotected items.

So it appears that the HKLM registry entries are actually part of Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal's defences !!

On this assumption I have re-instated the SECURITY DEFENSE and will ignore AVG's warnings.

    Does this help ??

Whe using spybot IE spyware blocker, it creates several fake spyware entries to avoid the real ones to be installed onto IE. The spyware thinks that you are already infected and doesn´t rewrite the registry entries, but AVG 8 detects them as real treats to your computer.

Like you I use a different browser, Opera 9.27. As was mentioned the warnings are cookies, what I did was go to Tools, Advanced Settings, Scan and unchecked Scan For Cookies. Subsequent scans show Threats at the end of the scan but shows no Warnings.

I moved from avg after they released version 8 as well. That was a very bad upgrade for them. It might have went ok if they allowed people to disable all the hooks they wanted to put into the computer. After watching it slow my computer down, I removed it and started testing other programs.

So far only onecare working as an "all in one" has not totatally disabled my computer. I have that because it was free on amazon. Kerpesky locked up my browser messed up outlook 07, etc.... had to dump that.

I might try avast... see how it works out. I uninstalled one of the free programs since it provided me a nice popup when I would first log onto the computer (avira.com). That got old fast.

Avira has the least resource usage. It also has high detection rates. You can easily disable the pop up during the update.
