Now that we're reaching the end of the year, some new reports have been published.
First, AV-Comparatives have published their AntiVirus Summary report 2008.
Like the title says, it's a summary of all the 2008 test results.
The outcome has Avira AntiVir as the overall winner of 2008.
    2nd is Eset NOD32
Please read the summary yourself to understand the reached conclusions; PDF link. (43 kb)

Second, Protectstar Inc., a ' worldwide independent company specializing in IT and communication security', as they put it, have done a very extensive test on current security suites.
Winner in this test is Norton Internet Security 2009.
2nd place is shared by Avira Premium Security 2009 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
Also here, please read the test report yourself to understand the testing procedures they've used for protection levels, user friendliness and performance; PDF link. (2,7 MB)
    Cheers.

One question: I read through the report but I couldn't determine - does AV-C test only paid (premium) software? If so, do you know if there is any appreciable different between the paid and free version of these security programs? Thanks

^ Yes, AV-Comparatives only tests paid versions.
Avira free misses antispyware protection, email- and web scanning and more (and faster update servers).
Avast free lacks only a script blocker compared to the paid version.
AVG free lacks antirootkit protection, web scanning and more.
    Cheers.

High detection statistic of Kaspersky AV has an easy explanation related to Kaspersky's and his lab's affiliation with Russian FSB (post KGB): those whom Kapsersky teaches at the FSB Academy do write viruses, and they possess huge know how about writing and spreading viruses (also because Microsoft had to disclose its code to FSB as a part of the deal of making business in Russia). Next day, after the major harm is done, these viruses are "detected" by Kaspersky. Other AVs, who have no direct access to these viruses written by Kaspersky's , have to rely on their heuristic recognition algorithms.
Hence the better formal statistics of KAV given the huge proportion of malware originating from Russia. However, a good heuristic recognition like that of Bitdefender better protects you from the malware from Russia and China before it enters the databases of virus updates of major AV programs.

    That's hilarious man.

Well, I am using NIS 2009. Glad to see someone else thinks I made the right choice too. :p

Seriously though, Zfactor, you made me lol.

How is Avira (both the antivirus and the suite) in terms of performance drain on the system compared to Eset and Symantec 2009?

Yes, I would like to know this too, esp. compared to Symantec 2009.

    I used Avira.

Check the thread on AV-Comparatives most recent AV performance test.
It's a test only for paid AV versions, not full suites.
Test results are available in PDF.
The test done by Protectstar.Inc, mentioned in the first post, also has performance measured.
    Cheers.

I notice no performance drain on my system when Avira Antivir is enabled vs disabled. It generally uses ~1 MB of RAM (see attachment).
