Meh. I've found Windows Defender in W8 & W10 (& MSE in W7) to be "good enough" that I don't need anything "better": they're unobtrusive, resource-light, and provide sufficient protection for the average user.

Indeed, along with the PUP Detection trick for Windows Defender, it makes it even better.

What a lot of these review companies don't mention is, yes, an AV might get excellent results in malware/virus detection and what not and may be light, but when an Antivirus conflicts with other programs or the OS, it becomes more of a nuisance than a safety measure.

Kaspersky is still a good alternative. But what AV software is the worst you can use(paid version)?

In my personal experience, Bitdefender Antivirus and all its other products due to the extreme bloatware involved and how it slowed down my internet.

Second is Avira Antivirus Pro, although it gets great detection results and they claim its light, it cripples my system to no tomorrow. like I cannot access my ASUS RT-AC68U Router's configuration page for example, corrupt data when copying files especially if I was on a RAID 0 setup, and lots of other quirks I wouldn't ever dare to try it again.

The worst of them all is Webroot SecureAnywhere, it claims to be a light AV, I've seen many systems get infected with it on and what's worse, its uninstaller doesn't work, you uninstall it, then reboot, and there it is in the taskbar again, it's like a virus. Not to mention that it is the king of False Positives.

Thanks. Personal/other's experience of such software is as important as reviews from different test sites. This really applies to all software/hardware you want to use. Nice to know what you should stay far away from.

My philosophy is your OS is only as secure as your usage habits. If you practice safe browsing habits and good backup practices, I dare say you don't need an AV period.

But for full disclosure I also have Windows Defender, along with MBAM Pro and MBAE free. Together with AdGuard adblocker, I've not had a single issue in the past 3 years.

@n=1: Agreed, and likewise haven't had a virus problem since switching from Windows XP to Vista on my T500.
