    Try disabling System restore and system protection to gain still lower performance impact by most AVs. WD saw greater benefit, I felt I was running ESET AV.

    I couldn't find AVAST in your test. Is there a reason for that omission?

    Edited post to say 'I found it in the PDF file'

    @Papusan

    I am now testing K7 Antivirus Premium to see if I would switch from ESET to this.

    What does user dependent threat blocking (the yellow bar in the chart) mean?

    Glad to see MS has made such big strides in their AV performance. I've found MSE to be even more lightweight than Bitdefender. Too bad ESET doesn't have a free option

    That is for files that fall into a grey area, not 100% safe or might be safe but exhibit symptoms that are similar to what malware may do so the Antivirus gives you a choice whether to allow or block.

    Windows Defender has a major flaw in its design causing a huge performance impact where it would keep scanning all EXE files in a folder every time that folder is accessed.

    for example, I have my Software folder which contains many sub folders in it, each with its custom icon and other EXE files all over. If I would open that folder when I have Windows Defender, the icons would start loading one by one in slow motion as they are being scanned.

    Haven't had that problem :vbconfused:
    All I know is my 3dmark11 physics scores are higher with MSE than with bitdefender and that's good enough for me. I am on Win7 though, can't be convinced to use that cancer called Windows 10

    You can disable ESET RTP module whilst running benchmarks though!
    It was their on-demand folder scanning which wrecked havoc for me as well, now they fixed it.
    Actually, WD is paid first party AV and they actually make it to perform worse to allow 3rd party AV to have an edge.

    @Phoenix What are your thoughts on this article? Funny how ESET NOD32 isn't even here although I've been running it for quite a while now without any problems on your recommendation!

    ESET has chosen not to participate with that biased testing anymore. They are paid shills. Just look at the Performance category for example, in the table, click on the Performance tab to sort them by performance level, heck, almost 50% of them get 6 out of 6 in terms of performance. Riiiiiiiiiight! That's all BS I've tested them all,some are indeed light but some are heavy as a brick. And the ones that they claim are light, take for example BitDefender, it is full of bloatware, password manager, software updater, file shredder, you name it.

    So ESET remains one of the lightest, most secure (haven't gotten a virus since using it more than 10 years), has a very powerful HTTP scanner even in the AntiVirus only so no need to go for the Internet Security, and best of all is just a plain and simple AV with no fluff.
