I had a question I've been wondering about for a while. I'm only using MSE at the moment. Granted, I'm very careful in general and almost never get a virus or anything, but would it be a good idea to get a spyware program such as Malewarebytes?

Also, does the Windows 7 Firewall protect against outgoing? I know it didn't in XP, but I saw outgoing settings under the W7 one so it looked like it would. Obviously, I might get a third party program if it doesn't, I know Comodo is awesome and light.

    Thanks for the help! :)

Its always better to have a second anti-malware app as on-demand, in case ur real-time AV misses anything. I definitely recommend MBAM or Hitman Pro (5 AV engine cloud scanner).

As for out-bound control using W7 firewall, see this. But if you're looking for a simpler solution, have a look at Windows 7 Firewall Control. Its a simple app that runs along-side the W7 firewall.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the linky. I went ahead and enabled outbound protection for the W7 firewall. I knew it was there somewhere. :p

I've used Malewarebytes before, and it had real time, is that still considered very good?

MBAM realtime is quite good ( haven't tested out myself). But, from what I've read at Wilder's, they still need to improve in some area's esp performance.

MSE is possibly one of the lightest to run in the background on a laptop :)
(yes, some people will whinge how it uses 50MB of RAM - does that matter nowadays though??)

Malewarebytes is a good programme to have handy - I run Vista, MSE and the Vista Firewall with Malewarebytes available in case I need it.

Actually Panda Cloud AV and avast! run lighter on memory usage from my experience. But like you said, that doesn't matter now-a-days. :)

What should be taken into consideration are the cpu times and I/O Reads/Writes . And in such scenarios, i find PCAV, Avast 5, Avira, all perform better than MSE.

My MSE is only using about 20 MB, which is insane. Plus, it's literally made for Windows 7, perfect integration.

But I didn't make this thread to talk about that stuff guys. I asked about what Anti Spyware I should use, if any, plus a firewall. It looks like using a third party firewall is a waste, but perhaps I'll give Malewarebytes a try.

Antispyware is a part of Microsoft Security Essentials :)

Its pretty good for a free product :)

That's why it switches off Windows Defender as well.

    Check the Antivirus Comparatives tests.

I think Microsoft Security Essentials with a weekly or monthly scan done by MalwareBytes Free is good. Always remember, only one RUN active AV system. You can have several on-demand scanners like MalwareBytes Free, but NEVER try to run multiple active Anti-Virus systems at the same time. In other words, you wouldn't want to mix MSE with the Full version of MalwareBytes or McAfee or Norton, they would cause conflicts.
