AV Test’s October 2017 ranking: surprise at the top

German independent IT security institute AV Test released its Windows home user antivirus ranking for October 2017 recently.

"A few programs share the top spot usually, and some more get the "top product" award. Kaspersky Internet Security is usually the top placed program in the test. Other antivirus solutions that get recommendations regularly are BitDefender Internet Security, Avira Antivirus Pro, Norton Internet Security or Trend Micro Internet Security."

"The October 2017 ranking holds a surprise, as Kasperky's Internet Security product shared the first place with AhnLab's V3 Internet Security program for Windows. Both got a perfect 18/18 rating; the only two programs in the test that achieved that."

Take AV-Test results with a pinch of salt. The same contenders are always on top, seems like they are paying them. Also their performance tests are flawed. They say ESET is one of the heaviest yet our trusted AV-Comparatives shows the exact opposite for months = http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php?chart=chart4&year=2017&month=10&sort=1&zoom=2

Plus, look at their bar ratings, all of them are almost 5 stars, yeah right, they are not even close in comparison!

no their scores have always been the same. Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Norton, Trend Micro on top, then the rest follows.

Bitdefender although has good detection rates, is the buggiest AV in the world. See: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...-test-results-windows-10.398251/#post-2721837

ESET needs to start paying them to make it look nice and fluffy as the others

I've found Bitdefender to be good for non-tech-savvy folks. It's actually saved my wife and parents from disaster. For power users, though, ESET is the better choice.

I personally still rely on Avast, on all machines.

Can't see the big difference in performance. But I avoid big packages as Norton etc. Smaller the better  and I don't talk about laptops :D
