    Hi All,

I have been using Comodo firewall for about 3 years, but it looks as I have to find an alternative, becauanksse it is causing BSOD on my new Lenovo W520 (one of the most likely suspects.

What best firewall would you suggest from

    1. Free firewalls
    2. Commercial firewalls

BTW, a long time ago I was using Zone Alarm, but it screwed my previous Win 7 notebook... I am still using it on my Win XP machine.

    Please share you experience.

    Thanks

Honestly I think the windows built-in firewall is more than adequate for most users. You can configure advanced rules in win7 as well.

I have enabled the default win 7 firewall + firewall Control (free edition). The interface is terrible, but it seems to be doing its job though. Just out of curiosity I have tested Comodo vs Win 7 built-in firewall with Comodo Leak Tests application: Comodo - 190/340 and Win Firewall - 200/340.

Online Armor, free or paid version and free-only PrivateFirewall are top picks as Comodo alternatives, both offer strong HIPS functionality.
Online Armor also has a 'run-programs-as-user-while-in-admin-mode', a more user-friendly install option, it's a bit more polished. link
(I'd say, try the paid version first (30-day trial), then fall back to the free version and then decide if you want/need the paid-for options also).
Private Firewall is more basic; it runs light and has a simple GUI but offers very strong protection also. link. (PF also offers excellent free support btw).

Both don't offer any sandboxing options like Comodo does but (free) Sandboxie is the better pick anyway when it comes to sandboxing imao.
If you don mind paying for software, then also check out not very well-known but renowned and 'rock-hard' DefenseWall; link

Thank you, I will have a look at Online Amor. I had already tested PrivateFirewall and got rid of it asap. It was freezing the PC when opening Outlook or accessing any applications requiring Internet access. I even had to boot in a safe mode to remove it from startup.

Setting aside Comodo BSOD problems, I was not very happy with their new marketing tricks they introduced recently. A few times I was getting a Comodo security alert that my PC is joining a unsecured WiFi network (IP xx.xx.xx.xx) and I need to click here to get more info and verify. Clicking on that button opened a web page offering some additional paid service from Comodo. BTW, my WiFi watch could not see that network with a given IP. A cheap and dirty trick from Comodo.

Have you asked on the Comodo forum or searched around other forums to see if other users have this problem? Might be that Defense Plus is blocking something and you need to Allow it?

Most free software that also has a paid version will inform you of the benefits of the paid version at some time so I don't think it's fair to call it a "A cheap and dirty trick" you can ignore the alert or turn it off completely if you want.
Go to Comodo > Firewall > Firewall behavior settings and untick Show Trustconnect alerts for unsecured wireless networks

I was going to recommend Private Firewall but I see you had problems with that as well.
Are you sure the problem is not with your computer?

Online Amor (internet love) is ok but it's not real love :p :D
Online Armor is a good firewall

All the best, woz of oz
