Will a 32 bit antivirus program like Symantec client security work on a 64 bit version of vista?

No .You'll need 64Bit version AV program.

Wait...I run 64bit with 32bit AVG. Are you saying it does no good? Is it not possible for a virus to enter and affect 32bit programs through x86 within 64bit Vista?

I use 32bit browser because video works easily. Is it not possible to get through by this method?

Ok so do NOD32 have a 64 bit compatible version?, as this seems popular if i need to buy a new one.

I would think NOD32 would work fine on Vista x64 - it works fine on Vista (had it installed on all of my Vista machines before I formatted them and installed XP) and I have it running on my XP x64 machine.

You can download a trial version if it.

32 bit security software don't work on x64 OS, but if it's a 32 bit process doesn't necessarily mean that it will not work. AVG now works on 64 bit OS.

My question is still the same...

Can a 32bit virus hit a 64 bit system through 32 bit programs such as IE?

Flam technically it can't be happen,Because 64Bit windows kernel is different than 32Bit,but we can't 100% sure about that!

I heard 14 Years old virus affect vista 32Bit. We all know 14 years ago virus writers never heard about 32 Bit system & they never target Vista ,Windows is not so safe like MS state.

It all depends on what the virus does on whether or not it would affect a Vista 64bit installation... It would have a harder time infecting the Kernal on a 64bit installation and patching memory, but it can still leverage holes in programs that are 32bit (Depending on the exploit type of course)...

Also, you can run 32bit AV processes in 64bit Vista and they will be treated like any other 32bit process, but in order for the AV program to patch the Kernal and offer very low level protection it will need to be 64bit... As only Vista 64 has "PatchGuard"...

Yes, it can, but not all the viruses can affect as much as they can do it on a x86 system.

It will work on x64 OS. These work: AVG, Avast, Kaspersky, NOD32, Panda, Symantec Anti-Virus (not sure about Norton AV). Possibly others, but can't remember now. All tested by me, except for Panda.

The question is though... How susceptible is 64Bit OS to viruses presently. Can a normal virus penetrated and plant itself in the 64bit system through 32 bit applications?

Am I safe to play unprotected? lol

Mind you, I just checked my AVG records and it doesnt appear anything is hitting.

Well, trust me one this scenario:
    1. You get a virus that deletes any file with a specific extension.
    2. That virus doesn't need any kernel hooking (something where PatchGuard would have something to say)
    3. It will delete whatever it wants.
    It's just that simple.
It all depends on what the virus needs in order to really work and stay there and **** up whatever it may want. However, I have Vista Ultimate x64 only with Windows Firewall, a hosts file and SpywareBlaster (which doesn't have a resident scanner, only some sort of hosts file) and I don't have any viruses.
