    Hello all,

I am thinking of upgrading RAM on my Samsung NP530U4C-S01IN

I right now have 6 GB RAM (came with laptop)

How much is the max this model supports? I couldn't find the info

Also when I run Speccy it says there are 4 slots available and only one used with 6GB RAM (DDR3-PC3-12800)
Could this be true? I've never seen a single 6GB RAM!
of course I could open but wanted to ask before I do

    I have Windows 8.1 x64 Professional editon

    any recommendations for RAm?

    thank you

Given that there's only SPD data for one 2GB module then there is 2GB in the slot and 4GB soldered (which doesn't have SPD data). You can get a second opinion using CPU-z or, even better, look inside (as already suggested).

I believe the notebook has the Intel i5-3317U CPU which, according to Intel, can support up to 32GB RAM in 2 channels (ie 16GB modules but these are very rare and expensive). Therefore your effective maximum RAM is the 4GB soldered + 8GB in the slot = 12GB.

I opened and found only one slot with 2G. Guess the Max I can afford would be 8GB which would make it to 12 GB

The other 4G seem to be soldered!!

    Thanks John & MeGuinness

Thanks for confirming what is inside. You are slightly better off than if it was the 2GB that was soldered.

12GB should be enough for most uses unless you want to run multiple virtual machines.

I ordered a 8 GB RAM and expecting it today

In the meantime i ran Curcialscan and found out the following

    memory
    • Maximum memory: 8192MB
    • Slots:2 (2 banks of 1)
Does that mean I can use only 8 GB of max memory?

The Crucial scanner may have only detected the empty slot and ignored the soldered RAM.

Anyway, you will soon find out. Please report back on whether the 12GB works.

Thanks for the update and confirming that 12GB works. :)

Whoever wrote the Crucial scanner software probably didn't think about how to allow for soldered RAM.
