hey guys I have samsung x60plus with ATIx1700 and i got a problem. Everytime I play warcraft 3 frozen throne, my screen freezes during the game play and and the whole screen blacks out a second after. After rebooting the computer, i get windows error message saying that my videocard encountered a problem either hardware fault or driver fault. It might also be due to the fact that i have some corrupted codecs that Ive downloaded over the past few weeks that might cause these problems. But the funny thing is, i do not get crash during regular surfing and watching movies, but just wacraft 3. So, i reintalled the driver to the newest driver samsung website had which was ATI version. 8.283.0.0. After reinstalling, same thing happens just freezes during the same game and not a single freeze in any other application. So my question is, 1. How do you uninstall every single codec that ive installed on my computer, and 2. where can you find reliable codecs you guys use? Thanks.

Codecs and video games have very little to do with each other. One runs in 2D mode, the other runs in 3D mode (since we're talking about WC3). What you probably want to do is install drivers like the Omega Drivers or something similar ( http://www.omegadrivers.net ), rather than the factory versions, which are often buggy and non-functional. I haven't had an ATI based laptop for a year, but that's what I ended up having to do with mine.

the reason why i said codec seems to interfere with wc3 is that when I had corrupted codec, wc3 would not start at all. so I uninstalled the last codec I had used and voila! works. But freezes during gameplay. qhn maybe your suggestion might also be the problem.... I dont know i need help. Im running windows xp media centre edition.

I would suggest that you install the latest ATI driver (7.2 as I write this, but 7.3 should be imminent). The link is in the graphics card thread. Cat 7.2 is the first ATI standard package to work on the X1700 without tweaking, but PowerPlay doesn't work (this seems to be a deeper issue - see another thread).

Then, if you still have a problem, search through the graphics forum and ATI support.

    Hope this helps,

    John

ATI Catalyst 7.3 is now available. It installs OK on my X60 plus. (No sign of PowerPlay, but we have concluded elsewhere that there needs to be a BIOS update to get it working). See if Cat 7.3 fixes any of your display problems. If there are remaining issues, you could also look in the Asus forum since some of their notebooks also use the X1700.
