Yes, any 9.5mm thick 2.5" SATA HDD should work. Just avoid the few that are 12.5mm thick.

The one you linked to should be fine.

    hi
thanks , I got a new hard drive , was not the hard drive , so bought a new connector for hard drive to motherboard from ebay and it all worked again , a little worrying why this would fail , but if anyone else has a similar problem where the hard drive is suddenly not recognised and they want to try to DIY,
    i would suggest

1 buy a sata enclosure from ebay , ( I got 1 for £5 ) - check if hard drive is still functioning with another computer

2 if the hard drive is still ok , then buy a new connector ( I also got one from ebay )

of course the above may not be the cause , but in my googling of the problem i did see someone else had replaced the connector and it had done the trick , so it may be a weak spot in the q45 ...

Thanks for the update and for mentioning the connecting cable. There's two possibilities for the ribbon cable to cause problems: (a) two much bending at one of the folds could break the conductors; and (b) the contacts at one end had oxidised. The latter problem can often be fixed by removing and replacing the connector.
