    hello to you all

i recently purchased a samsung v25 off ebay (i know slap on the wrists), it's in amazing condition, no major problems as such, etc.

anyway the two problems i came across were these:

    1) the dvd/cdrw drive needed flashing (reinstalled xp, now fine)
    2) the computer just freezes up intermittently

sometimes it'll go for a couple of hours no problem, and then it'll freeze up, the screen stays on stuff still whirring away, but no movement on the screen whatsoever, with the only way out being to turn off and on again via the power button

it's certainly not a software related issue (i'm not pretending i'm a whizz kid or anything, but i've ran enough checks and formatted the drive and such, so it's definately hardware related) but i can't figure out for the life of me, what the hell's going on

i reckon it's an overheating issue, probably just knocking the system when a crucial component gets too hot, but can't be sure - so is there any hardware diagnostic programs that could isolate this issue, or has anyone got any advice on how to fix this problem?

    many thanks in advice,
    ron

I would tend to agree with the overheating diagnosis. Perhaps the muck needs shovelling out of the cooling system. See this thread for an example of what happens after a few years. You can use HWmonitor to read some of the hardware temperatures while Mobilemeter will draw a nice graph of the CPU temperature.
