Yes it will work, but I double it'll make any difference performance wise assuming you are a regular user. 6GB is more than enough for anything, you'll only probably get to 3GB of use, 4GB when gaming and have multiple windows open at the same time..8GB is useful when rendering videos or pictures but not much else..

But be aware that the "old dinosaur" is unlikely to use DDR3 RAM which has only been in widespread use in laptops for about 3 years.

If the RAM nearly fits then you need DDR2 (which is 200 pin: DDR3 is 204 pin and almost the same sized modules but the key is located differently). Otherwise it is DDR1 (144 pin) that should be cheap if you find some on ebay.

You should be able to check by Googling for the computer specs.

If it is tri-channel, then you will have 3 RAM modules. AFAIK notebooks usually have two RAM slots (except for a few workstations which may have 4 slots).

6GB is accessed using assymetric dual channel. 8 GB (with 2 x 4GB) uses full dual channel which is slightly faster but you won't notice the difference in everyday usage.

I'm actually using 6GB at the moment. I need more than 4GB but 8GB results in much longer hibernation and resume times.
