I have just replaced my broken HP DV5 laptop (windows7) with a new Samsung NP350V5C-A08 with window 8. I am having major problems working out how to change the boot order.
On my HP the boot order was:
    a) Optical disc drive.
    b) Usb external hard drive.
    c) Internal hard drive.

This configuration allowed firstly to upload the Ubuntu program from the optical drive onto the external drive then allowed me to run Ubuntu from an external hard drive.
With my new Samsung I cannot get to list the boot options in the bios (the only option is the internal Hitachi drive), I have been on the phone to Samsung but they could not help me and told me to contact Microsoft.

Does any body have any ideas how I can run Ubuntu like I did with my HP laptop.
    Regards.

    1. You need to disable the Fast Boot option in the BIOS (if this exists on the Series 3).
    2. You may then find that pressing F10 at the BIOS screen gives you a one-time boot device list (this undocumented option definitely exists on the Series 9 but I don't know about other recent Samsung notebooks. Esc had the same effect on older Samsung notebooks).

you can boot from a dvd in advanced start up settings from windows 8.
you may need a ubunto dvd compatible with secure boot
you may need to disable secure boot ...but that may cause issues booting to windows 8

from windows 8 - click on settings (the gear icon when you bring mouse to lower right corner) select "change pc settings" - go to general - then select restart under "advanced start up" there you will find options to boot from usb or dvd drive

Two other aspects that can catch people out are (i) disable Fast Boot in (Easy) Settings and (ii) connect any bootable device to a USB 2.0 port. If there's no bootable device connected then it won't show up in the boot options.

    Thanks for your reply.
    Disabled fast start.
    Inserted Ubuntu disc in drive.
Plugged in the external hard drive, then did an advanced start-up.
External hard drive did appear in the option but the optical disc drive still refuses to show.

Did you try plugging the optical drive into the port where the external HDD showed up?

It looks like you are currently losing the battle with Windows 8/ SecureBoot / UEFI.

See if any of the suggestions here work for you.

Have you changed the options under BOOT (I think)\ OS mode - choose LEGACY

Then all devices and medias should be visible.

Just made an account for this post: I bought this same laptop and have figured this out, so I'm posting what i did for future googlers. I did everything said in this thread, turned off all the safeties and in the DOS, set it to legacy, and went to boot and disabled the only boot option which was windows yada yada samsung. then saved and exit, it rebooted, and went to a win7 install page. it didn't register my flash drive the first time so i moved it to one of the right side usb ports and tried it again, and it recognized it. delete all the partitions samsung put on the hard disk (6 really? you need six? you) and installed it to the the newly fresh hard drive.

This was a major hassle and i think they did it on purpose to discourage booting a different os, which is shady and pisses me off. them I'm using Win7 and cracking it and they can blow me. Hope this helps someone.
