hi i have the series 7 chronos best buy edition. it has the 6590m and with the screen brightness on 40% and only surfing the web with mozilla i get only about 4 hours. I thought these laptops were supposed to get like 9 werent they? also is it bad to have the laptop plugged in all the time even when its full? i heard the battery life might shorten over time if you keep it plugged it most of the time. which i think would be horrible since when you plug it in it performs way better especially in games.

I can't actually answer your questions, but if you have battery life extender enabled, then it only charges to 80% capacity. See easy settings | General | Battery life extender.

    1. Modern notebooks stop charging the battery when it is full (or such other limit as can be defined, eg 80%) and don't usually start charging again until the charge level drops by a few %. So leave it plugged in and don't worry.

    2. It can take a lot of research and tweaking to get the best times when running on battery. In the past, Flash (on web pages) and bluetooth were two if the power guzzlers I found. Start by looking in Task Manager and see the CPU utilisation. It should only be 1 or 2% if you want good battery times. The processes tab will show which processes are using the CPU.

Fun fact: I get more battery life in Samsung optimized mode than in battery saving mode.

Does the battery saving mode lock the speed down to the minimum? I'm one of those people who believes that it's more economical on power to let the CPU do its work as quickly as possible so that it can get back to sleep (the exception being if there is something CPU intensive running which will drain the battery more quickly if left to run at full speed).

If your using WiFi it will drain faster, and even if your surfing the web it depends on what your doing. I spend most of the time writing java programs. I can get at least 5+, but I never keep track. All I know it lasts me enough all day for school.

6950m that's got to be a typo. There is no such thing and 6950m is way too far fetch.

hello guys ; i just bought this laptop 2 weeks ago..

I hardly get even 4 hours battery life ; I use the lowest brightness and just use simple webpages like gmail, facebook(not flash) ..
I really bought this because of battery life ( upto 9 hrs mentioned) ...

It only shows 6 hrs on 100% charge ? maybe there is something wrong with this laptop? should i return it and buy other with more battery life ..!
I dont think this battery will last more than 6-7 months ; samsung claims 3 years but that must be a joke

i had the series 7 chronos for about 6-7 months before i traded up to a ATIV BOOK 8, same laptop essentially rebadged with 8gb stick vs 4+4

i always had a samsung 840 ssd installed, with moderate usage, i always got 6 hours of continuous usage.

if you ever put the computer to power saver mode, for say surfing the web, there wont be any major noticeable hit to performance, you can get 7+ easily

Use BatteryBar to (i) check the battery capacity and the wear (loss of capacity relative to the original design capacity).

Then use BatteryBar to see what power drain rate you get when running on battery. This provides a quick check on the run time forecast because run time = capacity / drain rate. However, BatteryBar, like the Windows power gauge, only updates itself with each 1% drop in capacity. If you want to explore the effect of usage changes then use the Sensors tab in HWiNFO which updates the battery charge and drain every second.

For good battery time you should be targeting a drain rate with a dim screen of less than 10W. You say no Flash but do you have a Flash blocker running? What power drain do you get on idle with no web browser open? If you are not using Buetooth make sure it is turned off.

Which power profile are you using? I use the Samsung optimized profile but power saver may reduce the power consumption further.
