Sata Connector on mobo has huge crack....

So from my avatar pic it's easy to see the internal sata port is cracked badly. This would definitely explain why any hdd I connect doesn't show in bios, but will show on other computers or with external sata-usb adapter.

Sadly, I think this sata port/connector/whatever is built into the mobo and for the life of me I cannot find a replacement...so what are my options? Krazy glue seems like a poor idea...

Is it possible to buy a different sata connector, try and fit somewhere and plug into the mobo and hdd?

Can I get an optical drive caddy/adapter, put the hdd in there and be good like new?

Perhaps this is why multiple HDDs never show up in bios and I can't get into windows! Now I just need to know two things to get on it:

1. Since it looks to be permanently attached to the mobo and looks like PCB under the power and data sides...what do I do to run SATA slot 1 from the mobo to my HDD?

2. How can i post photos? Best I've come up with is using my avatar...

Hi Dan,

When you write or edit a post, there should be an "Upload File" button, which is the preferred way to post a picture. If you don't see that, you may not have enough post count yet. In that case, sharing a picture from Google drive and posting the link should work.

I'm afraid I don't have much help to offer re the crack. We usually refer to Samsungparts.com to find spare parts. Once you have a part number from them, you can Google it for price comparisons.

I did see your post about being unable to extract BIOS. I hope to get time to check that this weekend. If Samsung changed how they deliver BIOS updates, that could be bad news indeed.

Edit: Oh, and I deleted the posts your marked in the other thread. I was actually ok with you posting there, but I appreciate the courtesy you showed to the OP.

I might just install the hdd in a caddy in the optical drive and change boot order in bios (assuming any of these steps don't result in catastrophic failure). I'm hoping to shed light on why that might be a terrible idea so I can begin formulating a plan B.

I suppose it's simpler that I haven't added/cloned any drives to this machine...and at this point I'm thinking a defective sata connector (I think I found the part listed as ODD although it's not for an optical drive; it's what the original HDD was plugged into) although I doubt I can tackle removing and soldering/connecting a replacement to the mobo. I believe that's above my pay grade.

This looks like the part, although I don't believe I have the capability of connecting to the mobo myself...

The cables usually are plugged into both the drives and also the main board, rarely are the soldered on but they may be a proprietary connector.

 

Yeah, sadly this one looks like it has a little soldered micro-connection (vein or whatever they're called) to the white lines on the mobo.

Sorry to revive an old(ish) post...

Is there a conductive glue I can try on the plastic..I feel like the crack allows the data side to separate just enough for the contacts to not completely touch.

Any other suggestions? Should I go for a caddy/adapter and replace the optical drive?

Ok, quick update:

Installed original HDD in optical caddy and eventually, using USB described in the bricked laptops thread, after trying all kinds of ways to boot/install win from USB, then laptop 'recovery' which didn't work, then USB again, I somehow got to win8. Nothing is installed on my HDD, which is fine, although I'm trying to do windows update in control panel and it's taking forever (says I have 133 updates - maybe it's foolish to select them all and assume it'll actually update them. been stuck on 0% progress for a few minutes now).

Is there a better way to update windows/drivers/etc?

Also, since my Sata1 connector is broken, can I ever install an SSD with this system or am I stuck with the HDD and that's it?

ETA: Also, should I just start at the most recent updates instead of the oldest first? I'm wondering if the old ones will never be found...

Update:

Typing this on the Samsung! Updates installed and kinks worked out for the time being...I only have a couple basic questions:

- I can just clone the HDD and swap in an SSD, correct? (if it blows up or refuses to boot I'm getting the hang of resurrecting this thing )

- It's running Win8, which I'm not very fond of. Should I bother updating to 8.1?

- I've been reading until my head started to spin about updating to Win10. I'm assuming it's not an option for this machine (not listed on Samsung's crap model list) and I should get it outta my thoughts (I would like to have the updated license, but I'll survive w/o it on this machine if it's a catastrophic failure trying to update to 10)
