    Hello all,

I recently purchased this laptop from a friend. I am happy to say I love it and it has been a solid notebook. I recently started playing minecraft with my 6 year old son and I can not move (using the keyboard) and swing my pickaxe or sword (using an Evoluent VerticalMouse3) at the same time. I even tried to use the keyboard and touchpad at the same time, no dice (yes, I unplugged the mouse's USB first :thumbsup :).

I have been through forums and answer sites saying that typically there is a setting for Palm Detection or something along those lines in the control panel. I haven't found anything like this in all of the menus I have been in, Touchpad, Mouse, Keyboard, Accessibility, etc.

Am I missing something? Do I need a different driver? Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Joe

    Hello Mizgo, welcome to NBR.

The laptop you got there is a Samsung classic, a very popular model from 2012, which used to generate a lot of discussion in its Owner's Lounge thread (linked below) where you will find a wealth of information (in this case humorously referred to as the Lovers' Lounge because of its thread title :D )

I do remember the issue of the touchpad being blocked while typing as a common complaint among gamers -- although I am surprised you still see the problem with an external mouse. In addition to being discussed in that Owners Lounge thread, it was a theme in the thread linked below, which contains most of the useful information here about Elan touchpads. Googling site:notebookreview.com/samsung touchpad registry keyboard revealed a post here containing a registry hack, but there is more if you study that thread.

The Touchpad control panel has an Advanced button where you can control Palm Sensity. If you don't have that, the original owner may have installed a different touchpad driver. You can find drivers from Samsung using the SW Update utility (downloadable here). They no longer post them on their web site.

There is also a "secret" control panel with far more features, as described in this post.

That's pretty much a complete index to the information on NBR about Elan touchpads on your Samsung laptop

Thanks for the quick reply. I have installed all the alternate drivers / registry fixes I have found with no success, thank you for those links. Ultimately, I used another USB mouse (just a generic 2 button) and it works fine with the keyboard button presses. So it appears to me that the Evoluent drivers must have a flaw in them or are passing the laptops flaw on to the mouse.

Thank you for the update. I love when solutions make sense and are not just random. In this case it was indeed puzzling why the Elan touchpad driver would affect behavior on an external mouse (even though that behavior is a known issue on the Elan, and it couldn't be ruled out). Learning that it was indeed the Evoluent mouse and its driver makes much more sense -- and shows that the Earth is still spinning at the expected rotational speed :D
