And there are some useful details on the Samsung HK site. The headline is "up to 9 hours run time". The specs there are for a dual core CPU.

Notebookjournal has posted a user review. The Passmark result looks very impressive.

    Looks good.

The pricing isnt bad either. Talk about competition showing up over night.

I see that the X420 (and X120, X520) has 64 bit software and drivers.

There's a chance that the software may work with other Samsung models.

Do you think it may work for X460/Win 7 64-bit as well?

It is worth a try and I think there's a good chance that the Samsung software (ege EDM) will work. It's highly likely that Samsung will have used the same system interface over many models.

Is this netbook or a notebook as it does not have a dvd-rw?

Nobody called the X360 a netbook because it had no optical drive.

I think netbook means smallish in size and smallish in price. Possibly <1.5kg in weight and <£400 in price. The X420 will fail both of these tests.

To me netbook means smallish and Atom (-like) based.

This is an notebook using Intel's CULV platform.

I just ordered one of these & will do a semi full review for you lads....
I have a zepto 6224W from 2007 which I reviewed 2 years ago and still use today as it is a 14" performance notebook (2.4Ghz dual)
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=135521

I've ordered this one for my sister (lucky girl) and will set it up for easy use.
Will take a few pictures and test out the so called 9Hr battery overnight
    after a full charge......

Basically I wanted a computer for her that would preform with office/ email /surfing & some video play, something she could do her business stuff on and still be comfortable to run for several hours on her lap without the burning feeling. I needed 1280x768 (HD) LED backlight (no CCD), sub 2Kg, no PSU to carry for day to day & have full wifi/BT/Ethernet and finally a SD HC slot for those 16Gb cards my Canon IXUS 100 IS camera loves....

I looked at Netbooks and the sizes are great (especially the 10" ones) but alot don't have the raw power to muscle with MS office and Multimedia.
My Ideal size would of been a 13.1-13.3 1280x800 unit with 8Hrs+ real battery life.

    will post soon.....

I will be very interested to read your review.

I would have suggested a Dell E4300 as an alternative although it would struggle to reach 8 hours on its 6 cell battery. A month back I picked up a red E4300 from here for just over £600.

Awesome, i will also be looking out for the review.

To me a netbook mean 12" or less under 3 pounds and Atom/Neo/Nano

Going by the reviews posted earlier it's a good notebook, but compared to Asus UL30a, it's over priced.

    Samsung X420 is € 699
    Asus UL30a is € 599

I've also seen them next to each other. In my opinion the Asus looks much better and thinner. The Samsung design is starting to look dated.

Actually I don't think so. Just look at Asus and Samsung netbooks. Samsung seems to believe they can ask a higher price. Maybe they can, I don't know.

I forgot to mention the Samsung X420 comes with SU4100, while the Asus comes with SU7300 here.

Some people will appreciate A 14" display more and vice-versa.

The Acer Timeline 14" models that come with a core 2 duo ULV processor are just as expensive. http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Timeline_4810TZ_Laptop_LX.PJN02.019/version.asp?PID=1374

The Samsung though has a better build. It also looks more professional.

I think i have also seen another x420 that sells for cheaper but i cannot remember where i saw it now.
    http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Samsung_X420-JA01UK_Laptop_NP-X420-JA01UK/version.asp?PID=750

    Edited to add:
The Asus here with a Core 2 duo processor is £599.

The price for Acer 4810T with SU9400 is € 599 here, the Samsung with SU4100 is € 699. That's a one hundred euro difference and a way better CPU.

    http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/245589/samsung-x420-fa02.html

I personally don't assume Samsung's build is better. Recently many Samsung N510 owners on a dutch forum are reporting problems with the hinges and paint.

I actually think Asus build is better. So like it or not, Samsung X420 is overpriced. At least here in the Netherlands.

Samsung can really charge whatever they want. If you think about it Samsung is pretty much the standard in EVERY area they compete in. Washer, refrigerators, TV, Cell Phones, Netbooks, etc. Of course they have a long way to go in notebooks but they have a huge following so i think people will pay extra.
