    stick it in my veins!!

the 15z was such a flop without a 14" and no quad core that I have been waiting for something.
    need to buy!

I wonder if you can replace the HDD. I know you cant the battery.
I wish they put a i7 in the 14 instead of i5. But its still pretty sweet either way

INCREDIBLE. I would sell my envy 14 and get that in a heartbeat.

Samsung basically hit every winning part. Up to quad processor, 6750m graphics, 900p matte screen (YESH), solid nice looking chassis, slim, big battery, backlit keyboard, good price range! Before, all the manufacturers would miss one part.

and yes, they copied apple.. but who cares? You use a computer the same way

Would seriously consider swapping to this from a SB MBP 15. I'm very happy with it but for $1000 less I can get the exact same specifications with, what seems to be, excellent build quality. I'm very glad that someone on the PC side has finally decided to take the elements of what make the MBP attractive and apply them to their own products in a hopefully successful way.

I must however agree that some of the elements are strikingly similar to design elements found on current and previous MBPs. Thin matte-bezel screen found on the santa rosa MBP, track pad from current MBP, circular feet from current MBP, and latch design from current MBP. The overall product is not a copy of a MBP, but something I think many of us switchers have wanted; a laptop that looks and feels great.

One concern I have is how is this actually cooled? A quad core with a high-end AMD GPU with only one fan and one small fan outlet?

Yeah, had to edit my OP with that information since that's a huge difference from the 6750M. :(

I guess the 15.6" model (in a 14" laptop-sized chassis) is more alluring to me then.

I think the vent is built into the hinge like the MBP's. You see that huge long hinge? I think samsung copied that too. xD

I want to be clear the 14in model has a 1600x900, 300nit matte display, right? If so, I am sold on it, unless the viewing angles and color are average like the Vaio SA turned out to be. It also looks like the 14in models may not come with USB 3.0 which is a bit of a no to me since the 15in model comes with it.

You know what? It's spooky, but if they perfected the touchpad, I'll almost swear they were reading my complaints and criticisms against the Envy.

They knew that building a thin/light notebook would pretty much require installing an integrated battery. They put alright graphics in a thin package. The backlit keyboard is a nice touch. I'll forgive them for the 1600x900 display even though it's not 1080p.

And copying? My . What DID they copy? Aluminum chassis? Chiclet keyboard? Both have been around for over a decade!

Oh no problem. Found it while I was in class, haha!

But seriously, looking at the 7-series again, it looks more like a Sony. Dunno why people are whining that it's an Apple ripoff.

    But open letter to Synaptics:

    Dear Synaptics,

You suck. You really do. What were you thinking when HP contracted with you to build a multitouch touchpad and design software drivers? Didn't it ever occur to you that notebook users would want basic functions such as "Turn off touchpad (but not mouse) while typing" and smooth scrolling? It looks to me based on reviews of Samsung's 9-Series and now even the 7-Series they may have actually included at least one of these two basic functions on Elan's touchpad.

It's a real shame. All my notebooks I've bought, used, or sold since 2008 had your touchpad hardware and software. But now that you've been screwing up left and right with a premium notebook, I'm frankly not sad at all to hearing about your share prices and market share dropping recently.

Apple continues to gain market share using its own proprietary touchpad and touchpad software even without any substantial investments in new designs. Get your head out of the sand and get to work, now.

    Sincerely,

    A disgruntled customer

First impression from the pics, it's a beautifull design.

Now I'm wondering like a previous poster, where are the speakers located? Maybe it's the same speaker design as the MBA? I'm also curious about the heat management. Only time will tell.

14in, HD+, matte, anti-business box. so.happy. I really hope the build quality is up to par- is the faux metal palm rest worrying anyone else?

also- anyone know if the 14in will come in black? The 17in Series 7 "gamer" is black...but I guess i can't be greedy

I'm wondering how warm/hot it will become when idle and loaded. It's not a big housing for a 14" laptop. But the specs look promising and maybe it will have the right contrast to go with the resolution.

Not remotely. Plastic can be plenty sturdy and I think is sometimes under-appreciated as a case material. Not only is it far less expensive than aluminum, but it has other advantages (it's not cold when you first touch it, and metal watches won't make loud scraping noises as you type if the palmrest is plastic instead of metal).

This literally seems like the perfect laptop, and it "the" laptop to get this holiday season (Just like the envy 14 last year).

The only problem is, I've used the envy radiance display with 95% color gamut since last year, and now that I don't have it anymore, I really want a screen with good color gamut.

Doesn't look like this samsung will cut it =/

Here is a link for specs

    Size wise 15 inch
    14.25x9.38x0.94
    5.09 pounds

    15 inch macbook pro
    14.35x9.82x0.95
    5.6 pounds

    Looks smaller than macbook pro

Looks like they make 14, 15 and 15.6 inch screen
    Check fine print at bottom
I think 15 inch in 14 inch frame would be awesome

Apple copied the early Sony VAIO's so it's not a big deal. The only thing that looks Mac-ish on this thing is the little notch on the bottom part of the chassis to lift the screen. Everything else looks Sony-ish or original.

I would say it's smaller since the MBP is 15in 16:10 vs the 15.6in wide screen on the Samsung.

I noticed this today too. I wonder if on the 15" in the 14" body would have the numberpad on the keyboard? If not I would probably just buy the one with a 15.6 screen.

I just bought a Macbook Pro 15 because I have been lusting at the hardware. I can't stand OSX, I am selling it and buying this baby! It looks like the perfect machine! I had the Dell XPS 15 before the Macbook and I think this Samsung might top all of them.

Dude I can't stand OSX (snow leopard) either. I thought it would be "intuitive" but to me it was less fluid than W7. No full screen button killed me. No easy tab button in safari hurt me. I hate the global menu. I hate how the file/save/open/print/options are on the menu which is separated from the program you are running.

Ok enough of my rant. Samsung might top the XPS 15 and MBP 15. I hope the reviews are as good as on paper.

Looks like they are filling a niche between the affordable but underwhelming Series 3 and the very spendy Series 9.

A 1600x900 display is not as disappointing as the 1366x768 displays that are so (unfortunately) common. Arguably, one may not miss the 180 lines vs. a 1080 display at that screen size.

Backlit keyboard, and USB 3.0 too. Finally! Took them long enough. For the USB 3.0 I mean. It has some advantages over eSATA, chiefly better hotplug support.

The Series 7's keyboard looks similar to the one on my Series 3. Which is one feature of the machine I like a lot. It was a reason I chose Samsung over the competition.

One thing not shown in any of the articles I've come across so far, is how the AC adapter connects. I've come to really hate the power plug sticking a good 2" straight out the side of my Series 3. An elbow connector would be so much better. No aftermarket elbow connectors are available to date, and I'm not convinced BixPower's "universal" replacement AC adapter would work (assuming I wanted to blow an extra $60).

That's a bit of a price hike for the extra 2GB of RAM.

$1,149 sounds like a fair price for the 3rd model from the top. You get an SB i7, a decent GPU, a bigger screen within a form factor that's still small compared to bigger-bezel notebooks, and all the other goodies of the Series 7.

After having used an Envy 14 1st gen for a year, I am never going back to regular, cheap display panels. Seems to me Samsung chose to use a premium panel. Anti-glare coating is a major plus.

    Two words: Do. Want.

Just slightly worried about kinda blueish screen compared to MBP on Engadget's pics. Could calibration help to improve that?

Samsung Series 7 Laptops - Engadget Galleries

Otherwise I really would like to get one. Looks like it ticks pretty much all the boxes.

Matte screen, good battery life, some reasonable gaming possibilities (AMD Radeon HD6750M should do a good work), Bluetooth, win7 pro.

Can't wait for real life reviews.

I wouldn't assume anything about the color of the screen from online photos. There's no way of knowing the brightness settings on the two machines, and the matte anti-glare coating on the Samsung could frustrate attempts to take photos.

What is the deal with Apple being number pad-phobic? I was shocked to discover that there is not a single Macbook model with a dedicated number pad, even the 17" version. Having a number pad is one of the big benefits of going 15.6" or larger. I guess Apple assumes none of their users need to work with numbers. Ever.

Yes but according to some spec sheets there is a 15" (NOT 15.6") version in the size of a 14" body, which is what he was asking about.
