I guess it's my engineering background, but I can always find scope for doing things better. For example, how about putting another USB port at the back right corner of the X60?

Yeah, USB port, anda slightly better keyboard layout. Though all these are really minor quirks. All in all, I am more than happy with my X60.

I would say I'm mostly satisfied with Samsung X60. But I do have a few issues that I'm not completely happy with, yet willing to let slide.
The first is the initial DVD playback/burning problems I had, due to bad firmware. Some of the problems have now been fixed but the DVD drive still needs patching as report by many others.
Another unwanted problem that I obtained with the X60 was that the DVD region code automatically changed to incorrect region without any warning. Even though it was set to "not selected" initially. I had to change this back to the correct region. I was not pleased with this since this used one of my region changes.
The screen of the Samsung x60 is fantastic but I have spot/patch of dead pixels when analysed from certain angles. Apparently this is characteristic that has to be accepted by LCD technology.

Samsung took a very long time to send me my insurance documentation. I only received this a few days ago even though I've now had the laptop just over 2 months. They never seem to call back for technical support and very often the support they've given to me has been of little good use.

One of the biggest disappointments from Samsung is their limited support for the free/discounted upgrade to Windows Vista. I'm sure several other Samsung notebook owners share the same disappointment. Although I've said alot here I would just like to remind you that I'm mostly satisfied with the Samsung X60plus.

    Thanks for reading

    Ben

A few points relating to the above post.

The TS-L632M in my X60plus has gone back for replacement after buring problems and a correspondence with the Samsung ODD support people.

The ODD is initially set to "no region" so you have to select a region when you first play a DVD. This is standard and you can't blame Samsung for this.

Nag them about the Vista upgrade for the X60plus. Send an electronic support request. Today I have received this reply to a message I sent on 25th January "This issue has been recorded and is currently being resolved, we apologise for the inconvienience caused by this, the site will be updated according". However, I am yet to be convinced that Vista is a good thing. For example, read this.

And I'm not blaming Samsung for the lack of PowerPlay for the X1700. Now that ATI have pushed a Vista driver out, I hope they will give attention to getting the X1700 working properly.

With relations to the Samsung ODD. I do now obviously now see that I maybe should have manually set the DVD region when I first obtained the notebook. But it doesn't excuse the fact that the drive had some erratic problems. For example I forgot to mention the number of misreported region changes remaining even when I did absolutely nothing at all. Sometimes it would say 3 sometimes 4. I just never imagined a DVD drive could be so temperamental. Therefore it cannot be assumed that I'm exaggerating this, nor completely say I can't lay any blame on Samsung. Anyway I've found my own way of resolving this DVD drive issue.

In regards to Windows Vista, I had no intentions to upgrade immediately because I believe every new release of Windows has its problems. It’s always best to delay it a little IMO, therefore they can get it up to scratch. I'm personally looking to upgrade in a year. That's if it’s worth it, since I'm just going to watch and see how it pans out.

The silliest thing is how the Ultimate version Windows Vista costs $249 dollars in the US but £249 pounds here in the UK.

I completely agree with ATI getting a proper driver out for ATI X1700. I guess there's only so much Samsung can do on the issue.

I love my X60 - there should have been an extra option for "improvements" rather than "regrets"...

    1. I'd prefer if the FN and CTRL keys were the other way round - I've got used to it now, but whenever I type on someone else's laptop keyboard (or they on mine), I hit the wrong button frequently.

    2. When you buy a MacBook, you can choose between a glossy and a matte screen. I'd have preferred a matte screen as the glossy one is a little too reflective (e.g. when using the X60 on the train - too many windows! - It's fine in the office, tho.)

    3. The weird partitioning of the HDD. I reinstalled everything when I got the machine, but I was only able to create a 87gb partition on my 100gb disk. The recovery and AVStation stuff is too well hidden! And anyway, the AVStation doesn't work anyhow, so that's wasted space :(

Otherwise, I love it to bits :)

I'm happy with my Q35 aside from one minor problem which is that I always get hot air blown out of the side vent onto my hand. I guess this is partially my fault as I insist on using a mouse and having the laptop very close to me and the mouse very close to the side of the laptop.

Other than that, I'm very happy!

The hot air problem is not one I have noticed with my Q35 because I tend to have it further away. However, the X60 plus and the R20 (to name but two) have the hot air blowing out of the left side, which is much better. I don't know why they swapped the good arrangement (which also places the HDD diagonally opposite the CPU) when they designed the Q35.

True, although having that little bit of warm air can help when I'm in a chilly room! Does the different arrangements between the Q35 and other models have the ODD on different sides?

The Q35 lacks the X60 plus's built-in warming device for the left palm which I found quite pleasant during the winter.

Yes, the other models I mentioned have the ODD on the right side so you need to move your mouse mat, if you use one (I either use a sheet of paper or the table top with an optical mouse).

Personally, I prefer the ODDs which open to the front, but this isn't convenient for the people who use notebooks on their laps. Also, with the thin form factor at the front of must Samsung notebooks this would involving one of the extra slim ODDs, which tend to have worse performance.

John do you use your x60-plus with remote control in the slot? I always use it without it since it somewhat reduces that warming on the left side of the palm rest! :D

At the moment the remote is in the slot (since it is a convenient place to store it) but I agree with you that having an empty slot reduces the heat coming up to the palm rest. That said, during the winter I appreciated having the palm warmer!

A palm warmer? Now I'm jealous!

I think having the ODD on the left hand side is preferable. It means I can open the tray, insert the media I am going to use without having to let go of my mouse.

Sorry to be late, but I just saw this thread today.

To disable the AVStation partition you need to boot with the Samsung's drivers DVD you got with the laptop. After boot with this DVD, it will show you a menu, and there is an option to disable this hidden AVStation partition. I did that on my Samsung R50 when I changed the hard disk for a bigger one, so I could use all the space.

I also vote I am totally satisfied with the R50. I sold it 5 months ago, and his owner tell me it works properly yet. No problems at all. :)
