Hi guys, new to the forum here, so this is my first post.

    I have a Samsung R710 (specifically this model http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Samsung_R710_NP-R710-AS06UK/version.asp?PID=)

It is running Vista Home Premium 32-bit flawlessly. I know that in theory it is able to run a 64-bit operating system, but I have read so many posts about problems concerning drivers for different things such as the screen, graphics card, blu ray drive, etc etc.

So does anyone know whether or not I will have any trouble installing Windows 7 64-bit on this laptop? I have looked on the Samsung website and can only see drivers for Windows XP and Windows Vista....it also does not specify if they are for 32-bit or 64-bit so my guess is that they are just for 32-bit operating systems.

    Many thanks in advance :)

I suggest you check what is listed for the drivers and software for the R610 and R720. One / both of those may cover the range of hardware you have in the R710 and both have Vista 64 versions.

Just spoke to Samsung on the phone regarding this issue. The man took all my details, and I was called back within 20 minutes. He said he had spoken to the main office at Samsung, and he could confirm that the R710 models of notebooks will have full support for Windows 7 32-bit AND 64-bit. He mentioned that the drivers for the hardware would appear on the Samsung website, but not for at least another month. So it looks like I'll have to wait until after 22nd October to install Windows 7, but I am very impressed with the customer service offered to me by Samsung :)

    siblades,

I have the very same version of the R710 and last night installed Windows 7 Pro 64bit with a few issues.

Firstly the Display manager software for screen brightness i had to download the package associated with the R620 (as there are windows 7 drivers and software published on samsung.com/uk) This now works a treat.

Next I did a Windows update and got most of the drivers except the Nvidia Graphics. I ended up with the standard VGA driver for that. Downloaded the Windows 7 Driver for Nvidia 9600m GT chips but ended up in a reboot loop every time i did the package install or driver only install via device amager. This im still working on  .

I gave the Samsung update plus software a go but got nothin with that either.

Everything else seems to work so far but i havent tried burnig a disk or playing a bluray as yet but i dont do a lot of that anyway so not rush with it.

When i get in tonite i will try again with the graphics.

    Treach,

    Hi mate,
When I installed the 64 bit Windows 7 Professional, Windows update found most of the drivers for me automatically and all my devices seemed to work perfectly. There were, however, a few exceptions.

Easy Display Manager was one of them, as you mentioned, so I just found a laptop on samsung.co.uk (can't remember which one) that had a 64 bit Windows 7 driver/software for Easy Display Manager. This worked, but it seemed to turn itself off every time I rebooted. I solved this by putting it in the Startup folder in the Start Menu. Now it works perfectly.

The scroller on my touch mouse didn't work either. Again I just found a laptop with a Windows 7 64-bit driver for it on samsung.co.uk and now it works perfectly.

I also downloaded new drivers for the bluetooth. It works ok with Microsoft's own drivers but you have to click on receive file every time you want to send something over. With the Samsung drivers (again any laptop with 64-bit Windows 7 drivers) you are able to send files to the laptop automatically without having to click on receive file first. Just remember that if you install the Samsung drivers, disable the Microsoft ones or else the 2 conflict.

I had to put in the orange Cyberlink Hi Def Suite disc that came with the laptop to install the CD/DVD burner and Blu Ray softrware. This works brilliantly, even though the Windows 7 Upgrade advisor and the Cyberlink Website told me that it wouldn't be compatible with Windows 7. What a load of rubbish :)

With regards to the nVidia drivers. This is what I installed:
    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/notebook_winvista_win7_x64_186.81_whql_uk.html
It worked a treat, so if you have downloaded the same one I don't know what the problem might be. You could try downloading/installing it again incase it got corrupt somehow. Also, have you made sure you have put your screen resolution to the native 1920x1200?

Now that I have 64 bit Windows 7 Professional installed, my laptop is literally flying! It's absolutely brilliant :)

Hope you get it sorted :)

    Hey Buddy,

Thanks for getting back so quick :) .

Thats the Nvidia driver I used last night. I will download again incase of corruption as you suggest.

Out of interest whats are your R710 experience Scores for hdd memory processor and so on now you are running 64bit Win 7.

Im just interested as I upgraded my Ram from the Std PC3-8500 1066 to PC3-10600 1333.

    Cheers,

    Processor - 6.0
    Memory (RAM) - 6.0
    Graphics - 6.4
    Gamign Graphics - 6.4
    Primary Hard Disk - 5.3

So my Base Score is 5.3 - let down by the Hard Drive, although I think 320GB is a fair amount of space.

    What results do you get?

I will let you know my score when I have all the drivers and softwares working correctly.

With regards to the 5.3 score it has nothing todo with capacity but more todo with read/write speeds. As the stock drive is only a 5400rpm it will let the side down a litttle. Im looking at upgrading my drive to the WD scorpio black ( http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=477) this drive gets really good read write scores so should bump up the score some what and also improve boot time and data transfer.

I will post my score tonite or tomorrow

My R510 still dosnt work with easy display manager, and whatever I try online still dosnt fix the issue. I get the error
Cannot find SABI.dll(126)! Easy Display manager will be closed.

I've tried copying SABI3.dll and changing its name, putting it in system32, system, windows and program files none of these seem to fix it. How can I get it to work!!

Yeah sorry, should have mentioned that. I'm using the R620 Easy Display Manager Drivers, which say they are Win7 32bit/64bit compatible.

Nope, exactly the same error. The program version was 3.0.3.6, the R620 had 3.0.3.8 but yeah both give the same error about SABI.dll. Where does one find a SABI.dll ey!! I've got a Sabi3.dll but no SABI.dll

I installed easybattery, easyspeedup and samsung support centre to no avail.

spamman, you should be able to install EDM on its own, no problems.

Something must be corrupt with your download, windows installation or even faulty memory.

Try running memtest for 1 pass.

SABI.dll is a samsung specific DLL so it shouldnt be corrupt windows. I've downloaded it a fair few times now so I cant see it being that, but point taken I'll get it again.
I'll give samsung a bell tomorrow perhaps and find out what they think. It installs fine, but then when it goes to start it pops up with that error.

Is there a way to test if my windows install is ok? There used to be something like chkdsk?

Hi everyone, I have a Samsung R710 which I couldn't resist upgrading to Win 7 Ultimate 64 last weekend.

I have also experienced the reboot issue with nVidia drivers. I too managed to get the 186.61 driver working for a short while but after a second clean install to deal with other issues, I now have constant reboots unless I use the VGA compatible driver.

Other drivers I have tried would not recognize the card, or would only load in safe mode.

Is this a firmware issue for the R710? I have seen suggestions to use the R610 bios upgrade to solve the reboots, any other ideas?

I have just remembered that I updated my BIOS on my R710 a few days before I installed Windows 7.

For the people having problems, go here http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/download/supportDownloadMain.do and download and install the latest BIOS update for your model of laptop. Maybe this will sort out the problems? It is strange that 2 people have had trouble with nVidia, yet mine has worked perfectly.

To find out what BIOS version you have, open a Command Prompt and type in 'msinfo32' and hit enter. The latest version for the R710 is:
    10SV.MP00.20090109.WZW, 09/01/2009

If this is not the same as your version, try updating it from the above website and see if it sorts out the problems :)

Ok so i updated my bios to 10sv from 8sv but i had to reinstall to Vista home premium as the bios update package wont run correctly under windows 7 or could be because its 64bit.

Since I have done that the Nvidia driver installed and now works a treat.

    As requested siblades

    Processor - 6.0
    Memory (RAM) - 6.0
    Graphics - 6.4
    Gamign Graphics - 6.4
    Primary Hard Disk - 5.4

With the HDD upgrade I mentioned the 5.4 should be about 6.4

Windows 7 64bit does fly on the R710 as you say.

Well happy with the result thank you for your input

Now im gonna have a go with my Q45 but go 32 bit on that

    Treach :D :D :D :D

And ditto for me too: 186.81 installed, no reboots after reverting back to Vista (thank you Samsung Recovery Solution III) and updating the BIOS before installing Win7 as you suggested siblades.

    Processor - 4.6
    Memory (RAM) - 5.9
    Graphics - 6.4
    Gaming Graphics - 6.4
    Primary Hard Disk - 5.4

I have everything working ok except the camera driver, it shows in device manager as "unknown device", i have downloaded and installed the 32 bit driver for the r710, and the 64 driver for the r620 from samsung. No beans.......

Can any of you tell me what the .inf file is from the driver details it would point me in the right direction !!!!

    Thanks
