They did it again. Samsung updated its Q30/Q30plus series with an state-of-the-art core-duo processor and calls the result Q40. It looks like the silver Q40 weights mere 1,14 kg and sports a U2500 core-duo-ulv-processor with 1,2 Ghz speed. (though there is obviously a pink core solo version available in Great Britain).
Look here for the IFA announcement: (no price for core duo yet)

(press pack for IFA 2006)
And here for the British pink version (1.200 GBP)

You were too fast for mee ....
But I've just added the PC World link to the "Samsung - where to buy" thread. Thanks for posting it. -
More details:
The Q40 could be available as early as end of september at least in Germany. While it is offered in pink in Great Britain there are no plans to do so in Germany. The product strategy is unfortunately different which also means you can expect higher prices. Though no official price has be disclosed yet the Q40 1200 silver with U2500 / 60GB HD is said to cost about 2.499 Euro list price which means street prices at 2.200 or 2.300 euros. I also asked if the new perpendicular harddrive technology will be integrated but unfortunately this is also not planned in the current product cycle. -
With Q40 Samsung has restored its leadership status among 12" ultraportables!
I already thought that LG Xnote TX will be the leader...
However, the price in Germany for Q30 and Q40 series is unreasonably high (it is obvious if one compares it with other countries). It is sad that Dell will not rebrand this model anymore. It would be a great "Latitude X2"! -
I saw a q40 solo at London Heathrow last week. It looks like the q30, still a beatuy (well this one was pink, which looks silly) but it still seems to be very well build. I am thinking about buying either the core duo version which will be available here next month (a retailer confirmed that) or a dell d420. but why carry around extra 200 grams if i could have it for almost the same price. (my d420 configuration sums up to 1750 euros while I expect the q40 with rebates for 1900 - 2000 euros, well we'll see) -
I'd rather see them upgrade the speed of the HDD which is the obviosu bottleneck on these things.
-
By the way, Q40 appears to be the first fanless subnotebook with ULV Core Duo!
I already thought that the "progress" made it impossible to have fanless notebooks because of increased power consumtion (5W to 7W for ULVs).
Now I am interested to know why Dell was not able to make D420 fanless, while
Samsung still manages to have fanless Q40 with ULV Core Duo.
Or, maybe, new Q40 is not fanless as its predecessor Q30 was?
LeonX, I think you would be able to upgrade yourself the HDD to a better 80GB 1,8" with perpendicular technology. We know how to disassemble Q30/X1 and hence Q40!
Q40 in Stock for 1190 GBP (still with Core Solo): http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/333920/art/samsung/q40.html
or for 1900 EUR in Spain:
http://gizmologia.com/2006/08/samsung-q40-edicion-rosa
I am afraid that the core duo version of Q40 will cost much too much (like 1,2GHz version of Q30 was priced around 4000 EUR while the price for 1,1GHz version was around 2000 EUR).
Surely, these prices are artificially high due to Samsung's market positioning of these notebooks. -
Well here's the answer:
Samsung didnt make it finally. Despite its announcement to ship the Q40 with a core duo ulv processor there will be only a core solo version available for now. For a while you could even download a Q40-PRO U2500 silver manual from the European Samsung webpages but for some reason they pulled back and now - voilà - there is only a Q40-PRO U1400 avalaible. With a hefty price-tag though: 2.399 euros in Germany (street prices at 2.100 euros VAT incl.)
I dont know why they always mess up the release dates of ultraportables but at least there is an still unannounced Q40 with HSPDA module waiting for fanfares. Wonder what processor they put in that little thing... -
Strange - Panasonic has that Core Duo chip on their fanless Y5 model, since early this year.
-
As far as I know the Y5 is a 14 incher - so there is more space to absorb the heat...
-
So what is the relative speed of this thing with 1.2ghz core duo ULV? How does it compare in practical speed to 1.2ghz core solo or any of the core duo chips?
-
Have a look at the Dell forum, some users posted a comparsion of the d420 core du and the d420 core solo. A nice machine but unfortunately the battery does not last long enough for an ultrapotable...
Samsung Q40 announced.
