    Hi all,

I've just purchased a Samsung Q35 at a local computer fair yesterday.

meanwhile, some first thoughts on battery life... it's looking pretty good! I did the usual porting of data/personal files, web publishing software installation, creating and formatting extended partition of hard disk. after 4 1/2 hours, the battery indicator showed 18% (36 minutes)

will calibrate the battery as well as write a more detailed review some time in the next few days to share my experience :)

    warm regards

i'll take some pictures soon, personally I quite like the design of it so far :)

colour scheme-wise, being silver-black, its not close to ipod-white than say, the sony vaio ones.

i've been using for about a day and a half now, and i would say it runs warm but never unbearably hot at any point in time. definitely ok on a lap even if you're wearing shorts.

    more soon!

    warm regards

    Hi,
I bought a Q35 in April and just thought I'd add my first impressions here too:
    Pros:
    - Great screen - In daylight I think it looked better than the Sony TX2HP (I bought it on Tottenham Court Road in London, and they had them both next to each other in the shop window)
    - Perfect size - It is light enough to be easily carried around, but not too small to be a pain to use, e.g. the Sony TX2HP. Its also smaller than the Sony SZ1HP, which was the other one i was considering getting before I saw them in the flesh.
    - Really quiet - I think it is really quiet compared with other laptops I have used. The fan doesn't roar in to life the moment you do anything.
    - The build quality seems excellent - Everything seems nice and sturdy
    - Battery life is good - I've only calibrated the battery once, and it lasted around 5 1/2 hours with medium screen brightness, and WiFi switched on. (I've also done that USB reg fix to improve the power consumption)

    Cons:
I've only really got a few minor niggles with the keyboard layout, and mouse buttons, both of which I have now got used to:
    - Mouse buttons have got quite a bit of 'give' in them before they click - Its probably only 0.5mm or so, but its quite noticeable
    - The PgUp, PgDn, Home and End keys are a bit squeezed in - See pic attached. They are the two buttons directly above the left/right arrow keys, quite a few times now i've been trying to scroll left or right and accidently hit PgUp/Down instead which can be annoying. Also, I generally use Home/End a lot more than PgUp/Down, and you need to use the Fn key to use these. I think it would have been better to swap these round, as you can use the edge of the track pad for most vertical scrolling.

But these are minor issues with an otherwise excellent laptop.
Hope these comments help, sorry if i've pre-empted yr review plainsman :),

    Cheers

no problem and thanks geoffp :) its great to have more owner feedback, there appears to be a dearth of information on these laptops on the internet at the moment.

i was looking through the recommended format/guideline on write a notebook review, man it is long! but it is good to be so detailed. i've taken pictures of my Q35 already, now trying to squeeze in time to write enough words (!)

i'll try to post up the photos by tonight first.

to add in to geoffp's comments:

    - yes, battery life is great. with wifi and sound on, battery manager set to 'normal' i can get 5+ hours on this laptop, its pretty energy efficient for a 6-cell.

    - i've conducted super pi test and got 2min 30seconds for 2million with battery mgr on 'normal' .. this appears to be a mode with 2nd core turned off. when battery mgr is set to 'max performance' i'm getting 1min 25seconds. will need some time to conduct pcmark/3dmark on it.

    - screen sharpness is good, its clearer than some of the other models i've considered buying. colour accuracy is a little off though, i'll check to see if there's anything that can be done.

    - build is good, doesn't feel cheap, doesn't look like it will fall apart anytime soon. it is quite a joy to type on it.

    - sound is good. it appears that the SRS feature is a surround sound algorithm that also utilises the body of the laptop to boost the low end, pretty interesting way of adding bass to otherwise typically tinny laptop speaker output.

    - yes, mouse buttons require a little more than average pressure before they 'click'. they appear to be made of metal too, and conduct a fair bit of heat. perhaps a small feature samsung engineers intended to help dissipate heat?

    warm regards and good day

i too have a Q35 and am very impressed with it!

the only niggle's i've found are that the screen is really quite reflective and the mouse buttons travel enough to contact before going click (if you have heavy thumbs this may prove annoying).
when i got mine and set it up i found that some of the drivers were out of date and samsung's handy online update tool had the same out of date drivers... this meant that the scroll on the synaptics pad wouldn't work with firefox.

as for battery time, i haven't left it on and still been around when it shut down, but i did watch a DVD on it the other night when it was on 65% battery (bluetooth, WiFi and everything still switched on) and at the end it still had 20% left! needless to say i was more than a little impressed.

my install of winxp pro is pretty clean, but i've still experienced a couple of freezes - don't know if that's the laptop or the OS.

bluetooth seems to work over longer distances than WiFi, but that might be down to my AP being very old and tired. via bluetooth and motorola phonetools 4 i don't think there's any reason to take my phone out of my pocket any more - good thing too as i have a motorola V3 (why oh why did i go for a 'fashion' phone?!)

all i need now is a laptop bag it doesn't seem lost in...

    Hi all,

I have also purchased a new samsung Q35 last sunday.

I wanted to partition the harddisk and had problems.

First i used the windows recovery to partition and every went well, with 2 partitions, then i wanted to do the avstation. Then to realise that i cant recover avs when windows is installed.

Thus, i redo the whole thing again using the avs recovery first to do the partition. then use the windows recovery to install. I ended up with 3 partitions C:drive is used soley for avs and the hardisk is partition in D and E drive, and E is the primary drive instead of C or D.

And now when i on the laptop with avs station now it doesnt go into avs but into windows. (it wasnt like this when i first bot it)

Can anyone help me? how to recover my avs now.. is it possible to partition into 2 drive only?

Do you really have a backup CD from your AVStation now or just the normal AVStation?

If you have a CD for AVStation now , go into the BIOS, change to Advanced and selete Enable at Delete Recovery Area. Save the changes. After restarting boot from the AVStation now CD. The CD will offer you multiple choices. One choice is AVStation Now Installation. Take this and wait for about 5 minutes. Remove the CD from your drive and turn off your PC. Finally, start your notebook with the AV-button.

If you don't have such a CD contact Samsung for one. I think they are giving it away for free - I got mine without any costs.

    Thanks for the help

I managed to resolve the problem. The reason it didnt work out in the first place because i partition wrongly using windows recovery. I already had 2 partition when i tried the second time using avs now recovery, thus avs partiton for me again hence ending up with 3 partition.. and avs was somehow in one drive in windows, thus it is not able to start up without entering windows.

To resolve the problem, i had to delete all existing partition and redo the whole thing. My mistake before was that i did not remove the partition i did wrongly in the first step. I redo the whole process with avs recovery and it worked fine. I can enter avs now and i have 2 partitions C and D. Avs took up part of the hardisk space (abt 13GB).

Hope new users can learn from my experience when doing partition. Cheers :p

Could you also tell us about the AC adaptor. I currently have a Sony TR1 and it has a very small and light AC adaptor however I have seen other peoples laptops with huge adaptors.

How big is the adaptor on the Q35 and how heavy is it?

    Cheers

Thanks for the info, it seems a shame that it is quite a big power brick, my current one is about 1/3 volume of that :(

I don't know why they would make an ultraportable laptop with a big PSU

for that spec and low price, believe me the power brick is easy to live with! (not that you need it that often with it's nice long battery life...)

I am interested in the Q35 but was wondering if they are planning to do the Dual 2 Core in it sometime?

From what I read, the core2 cpu is a simple upgrade so you would imagine that this is on their horizon. I was thinking about a macbook but they are busy equating small size with cheaper quality which is the reverse of what I am after. I would gladly pay for a fast 12" laptop /tablet running MacOSX (I'm dreaming...). The Q35 is the best alternative from what I am reading.

I currently use an X31 Thinkpad but since Lenovo took over, I've concerns about their quality.

Maybe a new Q35 with Dual Core is being planned. But it is also realistic that Samsung makes a new series as the successor of the Q35.

To sum it up, there are no information about this thing available today. Usually Samsung releases their new notebooks quite quick with no much announcement (at least in Germany/Austria).

Hey, Guys, Samsung has announced their upgrade to Core 2 Duo processors. I'm thinking of buying the Q35 it looks well cool and has amazing battery life although I'm also considering the Toshiba Dyanbook series which is also great. I'm not sure whether I should wait for the new Santa Rosa platform featuring the GM695 and X3000 graphics ...

Well, my Red Q35 came today, and im really impressed! the laptops footprint is tiny, it weighs next to nothing and runs very cool and very quiet.
However, my main observation so far is the speed that it runs at! Its amazingly fast, the 2.0ghz core 2 duo processor is rapid and has no problems coping with anything that is thrown at it, coupled with the 1.25GB of DDR2 RAM it has no problems with multitasking. However, the battery life suffers a bit, its down to about 4 and a half hours on this model, but thats more than enough for me, and I imagine, if you turned the max battery life feature on, you would see more like 5 and a half hours.
So first impressions are fantastic, now just to see how it holds up over the next few weeks!

    A few questions:
    A) Which country are you in, Just had a look and it seems like in the UK these models will appear in the next couple of weeks

    B) Which model number do you have, I think in the UK we will get the Q35T006 which has the T7200 (core 2 duo 2.0Ghz) with 120gb hard disc and the Q35T007 which has the T5600 (core 2 duo 1.83GHz) with 100gb hard disc. From your post I think you have the T006, did you get a 120gb hard disc?

    C) You say 4.5h battery life, could you just expand on what you were doing, is that surfing and emailing with wifi and full screen brightness or is that idle screen off in a corner?

    Thanks

    Rod

Okay, yeah you will get a review, when i have time! I'll try and sort one today. Mine is a UK Spec Q35T005 MXD
Its a limite edition one with the red case top.
It has a 2.0Ghz T2500 Core Duo Processor, 1256MB DDRII RAM, 100GB SATA HDD, DVD+/-RW DL, Bluetooth, wifi, the usual crowd of features.

With wifi and bluetooth on, surfing, emailing, typing and listening to a few songs on iTunes, with the Battery manager set to Max Battery, and the brightness on 6/8 I see about 4 and a half hours battery life, however, if you turn the brightness down more, and put it on mute then you get nearer 5 and a half hours. Idle screen off times are quoted at 7.15 hrs by windows, however I havent tested that as yet.

    Thats great, thanks.

It is nice to have a real life runtime, not some synthetic who knows what from the manufacturer

Yeah i know what you mean. What i do like is it has a built in battery conditioner in the BIOS, that will run the battery totally flat, quite a clever idea, and should help retain the battery life.
So far I have noticed that the screen brightness has a big impact on the battery life, but having it on low while travelling doesnt really fuss me a great deal

it's weird, i found that the freezing problem becomes less the more you use it. i now hibernate my laptop rather than turn it off and hardly notice the freezing at all. if i actually restart windows, the freezing comes back, but in time goes again.

I've got a question to those who already have the Q35. I want to know, if the optical drive can be changed? And if so, is it a usual 1/2" (12.7mm) height slim drive or an unusual ultra slim drive? Okay, those are two questions :p

    Thanks in advance

It looks standard however the bezel on the front is a wierd shape. It does have release screws so it can be changed... Not sure why u would want to though? Is a Dual Layer DVDRW not enough?

Thanks for your reply. I would like to change the drive because I bought a better one for my old notebook, at least, I know what to expect from my drive (4x +R DL for example). The front shouldn't be the problem. From what I have seen in a shop, the drive looks pretty usual so the front should be exchangeable.

Well, can you tell me, which drive is in your Q35 (can be found in the device manager)? In Germany it would be a Teac DV-W28EA which only supports 2.4x +R DL recording. The drive I already have and would like to use is a NEC ND7550A. Since there are different versions of the Q35, you maybe have another drive in your one.

Hi. I am looking to buy a Q35. I have read through the forum and searched the web but one answer eludes me-

In the Q35 is the Yonah CPU interchangable with a Merom CPU?

From what I can gather it would seem so- given there are many configurations available, but I want to know for sure. It seems here ( Hong Kong) that the best Q35 you can buy is the T5500, but the T2300 model is also available and considerably cheaper (~US$190). I think it might make good sense to buy the cheaper one use it, and if there are any future compatability issues with 64 bit, well then you can sort of dodge the bullet. Or just upgrade a bit.
Thanks for you help with this one

    update
    I bought the a Q35 the CD 1.66Ghz
Good battery life, typically 3-4 hours for everyday usage.

Ubuntu went on OK, a few problems with the WIFI and the sound card
    but fixable.

Well I finally jumped on board!

I picked up a Q35T006 model with T7200 1.25GB ram 120GB HD. I can only echo everything that has been said already. I really really like this laptop.

The keyboard has a few keys in weird places but that is just something to get used to.

Also earlier in this thread I asked about the size of the power adaptor and was told 160x70x30. The adaptor I received is much smaller 105x30x45 which was a very nice surprise.
Also the battery has a battery meter. You press a button on the pack and 6 led's light up to say how much charge is left.

In my perfect world I would have had the USB port at the back vertically orientated and have two function keys so that I could change the volume with one hand.

I seem to be getting 5 1/2ish hours when doing word processing and browsing the web, without particularly agressive power saving options. I have not yet tested it in anger outside the house, that will come next week.

    Hi,

Could someone please comment on the fan of the q35 :)

So, how is the fan behaving in Office-usage (Text, Internet, .. ) ?

Is it possible to shut the fan down ? (Via NHC and the other Progs )

Samsung NBs have a so called "Etiquette Mode" where you can shut down the fan completley by pressing two keys. Actually, the HDD is louder than the fan and you don't hear the fan in normal office use.
