I seem to have a high pitched noise coming from the right hand side of the machine near the power button. I assume it's coming from the HDD, and it only does it when the HDD is idle.

The noise is fairly quiet, but just loud enough to be annoying. It's not constant, but it only lets up for like a second or so every now and again.

It's probably been there since day one, but I've only just got rid of my desktop machine which used to be on 24/7 in the same room, and was quite noisy.

Forgot to mention, the HDD is a Samsung HM100JC.

    Thanks in advance
    Neil

The Samsung HDDs are normally very quiet. The other main component which is in that part of the notebook is the CPU and I wonder whether you are suffering from the infamous CPU Whine. If so, it is the first time I have heard of it on a Samsung notebook.

One test would be to use RMclock to provide the patch discussed here. The whine is caused by components responding to changes in the CPU power states. You are getting the noise when the HDD is idle, so most likely the CPU is idle as well.

Thanks John...I used the "Run HLT command when OS is idle (restart required)" option, as it was nice and simple just to try, and the noise disappeared almost completely, so it would seem that I am indeed experiencing the "infamous CPU whine".

I've set it back for now until I can run through the other method. I'm not so bothered now I know it's nothing sinister :)

Good, we have diagnosed the problem - the first instance of this that I've heard with a Samsung notebook. I'm not sure what impact the Run HLT has on the battery run time.

Looking at that thread, I'm guessing the impact on battery life is massive, so I've reset it back to normal.

I may go through the more complex procedure that doesn't impact battery life so much, but I'll probably leave it as it is for now, as I was mainly worried that it could be a failing HDD.
