Help guys, my screen has smashed on my lap top and I need to transfer the data to an external hard drive before I send it off to insurance company, but as I cannot see a single thing, I have tried to connect an external monitor. No good, i have tried all the FN + F numbers but no luck. Any ideas?

Fn+F4 is the combination to switch the display. Each time you press that combination the computer should take one step through the available options. eg internal, external, both,...

It is best to connect the external monitor before you start the computer.
