After digging through both the US and Korean Samsung websites, I've mostly figured out the important differences between the different models. Hopefully this will clear up some of the spec confusion.

For the Notebook 9 15" 2017 models there are three categories: K, L, and X. Just look at the letter after the dash (-) in the model number.

K - avoid these models if possible. It is the 2.16lb wonder they brag about to reporters and indeed it is under 1kg and aimed at the LG Gram. However, there is only a 30wh battery in the unit, which is less than half the size of the other models. Definitely not worth it unless you want the lightest thing out there no matter the cost. These models also do not support thunderbolt and the usb c port can only do 5gbps, which makes it doubly terrible.

L - These models are the midrange with a full 66wh battery and weigh 2.6lbs. They only have integrated graphics and 5gbps usb c instead of thunderbolt. The $1249 8GB model you see on samsung's US website is this one.

X - this is obviously X for XXXtreme. Or as Xtreme as Samsung wants to go with their ultrabook. This one does come with the coveted 940mx as well as full 66wh battery and actual thunderbolt and not a gimped usb c. This is the heaviest at 2.7lbs give or take. You will also get a bigger 65w charger. The $1399 model you see being listed everywhere in the US is this one. Samsung's US website uses wrong info of course and won't admit to it (I emailed and live chatted with them to no avail) so don't be alarmed when you read integrated HD 620 in the spec sheet.

The RAM and CPU configuration will vary on individual models within each category.

If you don't like the design or color and prefer a matte screen you can always opt for the notebook 9 pro.
