i have been searching high and low, i am avidly researching whether samsung uses a proprietary MXM or standard MXM, i had one live chat rep on samsung's website tell me it is mxm 3.0 but then he said hes not sure...i looked at the slot on my laptop and it looks standard but i dont want to spend money just to try and see if it works....I just e-mailed the appropriate e-mail address at samsung to ask this question but i doubt if they will answer seeing as even if it were MXM they wouldnt advocate a owner doing such an upgrade.......

Lets put an end to this once and for all....MXM or Proprietary?

and if it ends up being proprietary...does samsung sell individual GPU cards to upgrade?

    Here's the research I've done..

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/8623947-post755.html

As you can see there is a small cutout on the upper right that looks like it might be a prioprietary shape, but the connector and mounting holes look identical. This is the NP700G7A though with the 6970M.

Did you take yours apart? Take pictures of the 675M card and post them!

hmm i will try, i have taken laptops apart before, but as we all know they can vary in construction complexity...it seems on one you only have to take off the back panel...on others you have to take off the damn keyboard to plug a USB mouse in lol....logging off now and will see what i can do....if it seems as if i may not be able to reassemble it...i will stop....quite the investment here heh.

My guess is it's the same exact chassis with three different GPU. Not sure why they would change it between A and C and the upcoming 7970M version. Shrug. Stranger things have happened.

I opened up my Samsung NP700g7c Gtx 675m and what i found out that is it is an mxm module connector. BUT they custom make the mxm gpu module liek asus.... it is NOT mxm 3.0. the only reason they did this is so that if the vidoe card frys they do not have to replace the whole motherboard... trust me i am pissed to...should have stuck with my m18x...

the problem is that it looks like true mxm cards are square, if you notice Sammy card has a cut out on the upper right corner. A square card may not fit.

Has anyone disassembled it far enough to remove the keyboard and reach the RAM sticks installed under it? I really want to upgrade the RAM in mine, but I have no idea how to upgrade those sticks. I would love to have some pics or a video of how to safely remove the keyboard.

even if it is MXM3.0b it doesn't not mean you can upgrade.

Not really. You see I'm not a gamer (not a hardcore gamer that is, I play lots of Civ 4 and Total war). For me the main purpose behind buying this machine was that it was by far the most cost-effective high end laptop I could get, thinking I could get by with just 16GB of RAM. At the time Samsung was doing a VAT back scheme in the UK, making this machine a full £600 (~$850 USD) cheaper than anything else in its class. Even with the addition 4 RAM sticks, this is still much cheaper than anything else like it.

I do all my work inside virtual machines, and I have no fewer than 4 running at any given time, consuming lots and lots of RAM. In the past, I have used laptops when I'm not home exclusively as a way to remote desktop in to my workstation at home where I have a nice 64GB of RAM, and although that solution works well, the connection is sometimes laggy (especially internationally) and therefore I thought I would try a laptop that can run everything natively. This one does a marvelous job, except that I sometimes try to run too many VMs and the whole system slows down or refuses to start any more VMs. Even putting the swap file on a super fast 80000 IO/s SSD does little to ameliorate this problem. So I thought I would upgrade the RAM to 32GBs by replacing all the sticks. I managed to replace the bottom two, giving me a bit more headroom with 24GB, but the other two are under the keyboard, and I don't know how to reach them. I don't want to try an disassemble this machine without knowing roughly what to do.

You can get this laptop apart just fine if thats what you want to do. Just take your time. There is only 1 screw to take the keyboard our on the back it is marked KBD on the screw hole and then all of the catches at the top of the keyboard. There is a couple little strips of two way tape but it is not difficult. Just be slow and careful. To get the laptop right apart the hidden screws are a few under each hard drive, a few under the battery, a couple in the hard drive bay, 2 under each back corner under the rubber not the feet though and 2 for the screen at the bottom on each side under a rubber tab and a few under the keyboard. The rest are obvious and need to be removed except any for the screen but I did remove the bezel and that's where I started taking the laptop apart from the plastic catches. One of the screws under hard drive 1 does not have to be removed it is just for the button board on the track pad.

From what I understand the vbios is integrated into the main bios. Not only would you have to possibly (no one has tried I don't think) file the case down to get it to fit, you would have to mod the BIOS to integrate the correct vbios.

If you want a unit that is upgradeable you are better off with a different unit.
