    I'm fairly sure that the chipset supports modules of up to 2GB. Intel's specs say maximum 4GB RAM but doesn't specifically mention that this needs to be using two channels. The best you are likely to get is 2.5GB - 0.5GB on board and 2GB in the slot. Not bad for a 6 year old computer.

    I've never seen a way to disable the on-board RAM. I'm sure there's no option in the BIOS.

    Possibly the only way to get a performance boost would be replace the HDD with an SSD. That would vastly improve the disk access and make living with a pagefile more tolerable. However, you would need to check your current HDD connector type. I recall that some of the Q35s had an IDE HDD and some used an SATA HDD. SSDs are only compatible with the latter.
