    Hi,

I've noticed that my new NC10 is doing some "click" noise approximately every 5 seconds when there's no hard disk activity. After doing some research, this noise may be due unloading the heads when idle.

Apparently, Samsung uses 3 different brands of laptops. Mine is a Fujitsu MHZ2160BH G2.

Does this noise happen on all NC10s, or it's just a defective unit?

My HP dv6700 makes a clicking noise every 5-8 seconds when idle too since the day I purchased it. At first I thought it was dying but I received it January 30, 2008 and it has almost been 1 year already and the drive is fine aside for the annoying clicking noise it makes when I'm not using it. Mine is a Western Digital drive though. Wish I could replace it but I'm too poor at the moment.

It's just the hard drive pickup arm that's being parked in order to reduce wear and increase shock resistance somewhat. All 2.5 inch and smaller hard drives I've come across do this. Some louder than others.

Yes, clicking noises are kind of normal, but every 5-10 seconds?? If the hard disk is idle, and not being used, shouldn't it just make that noise once?

I've owner several hard disks, including other Fujitsu, and they didn't show this behavior.

I already tried it before starting the thread, and it didn't seem to work... I just wanted to confirm that this behavior is normal, and happens to other Samsung NC10 users with Fujitsu HD.

Just posting again to confirm that disabling APM with HDParm doesn't stop the noise. Hence, it might be either a defective unit, or just a bad HD firmware, IMHO.

do hard disks ever get much opportunity to sleep?

See what the Sysinternals DiskMon utility shows.

I've got the same issue on my U100 and mhz2160bh, none of methods posted all over the internet (quiethdd, hdparam, nhc) seems to work. The only one way, is running HDD Observer (or, i suppose, other hdd monitoring program) which, i think, kinda doesn't allow hdd to stop and park heads. Then the clicks stops, but time on battery decreases somewhat by 10-15 minutes.
But what is 15 minutes for NC10's battery ;) ?

Ok, so the problem seems to be related to this particular hard disk model... thanks a lot!

I think I'll end changing the hard disk. Hopefully cheap SSD drives will be available soon :)
