Hey everyone, I have had an issue with my Samsung Ativ Book 6. The screen brightness won't adjust. When I have it plugged into the charger, the screen is bright, but when not on a charger, the screen is dim. Additionally, the charger has to be plugged in before I start my computer for the screen to be bright.

My FN buttons work just fine, I see the brightness bar moving when I press them. Additionally, I have tried going into brightness settings and changing the brightness, and also changing brightness settings like using Power Saver mode or Samsung Optimization mode. No modes work, and no route of changing the brightness of the screen works. However I know the screen is capable of being brighter because it does so when I plug in the charger.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I have seen tons of people ask about this and I have tried some of the solutions (like manually changing brightness or changing the brightness mode) but nothing seems to work. I am on Windows 8.1 and I tried uninstalling my Display driver and reinstalling it, still no luck. Thanks guys!

Which version of Settings are you using?

Some of them include an option to deselect Adaptive Brightness. V 2.0.0.89 (see towards the end of this thread) may be a good place to start although later versions may be better if you don't have ExpressCache or need Battery Life Extender.

There's more detailed discussion of adaptive brightness somewhere but I can't find it at the moment.

You rock John, custodian of the Samsung forum! I was just about to reply the same thing, got up for a cup of coffee and you had already nailed it. Only thing I could add is I had the same issue once myself after SW Update updated my graphics drivers. I resolved it by trying a different version and have been using unofficial drivers ever since. Try John's suggestion first though, as swapping and testing drivers on these lappys is more of a pain than it should be.

I humbly apologise for stealing your thunder.

Too often there seems to be no one with more relevant experience either available or inclined to answer and if I don't respond quickly I usually forget.

Thank you both for your quick replies! Unfortunately, I deselected adaptive brightness following all the online instructions, and the problem has not been fixed yet. My computer still only stays at two different brightnesses (a dim one when not plugged in, a bright one when plugged in).

You would think that since plugging it in makes the difference that it would be some kind of issue with my Power and Brightness plan or something, but the Adaptive Brightness deselection is probably the last thing out of 20 different options that I have tried to work with pertaining to Power plans. Ryan, do you mind further explaining the solution that you started to mention?

Thanks for all the help guys!
